On June 11, 2024, Martin took to his blog to talk about Eboni Booth, the playwright who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama this year for her play Primary Trust. In his post, Martin congratulated Booth and also revealed she was working on a Game of Thrones spin-off titled 10000 Ships (Ten Thousand Ships).

We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.

Martin made the above statement providing an exciting tease regarding the in-development series set in the world of Westeros.

At the same time, Martin also revealed that Booth had been busy working on the pilot for the proposed series, hinting that the spin-off is still in the early stages of development. The author also confirmed that the series will focus on Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar and her voyages across the seas.

Everything You Need to Know About the Game of Thrones Spin-Off Series 10000 Ships

A series based on the voyages of Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar was first reported to be in development at HBO in March 2021. At the time, the story was expected to follow Nymeria and her people in the aftermath of their defeat during the Second Spice War. As a result, the series would likely have focused on the Rhoynar clan’s journey from Essos to Dorne, where they settled down.

In April 2024, Brian Helgeland revealed that he had pitched a 10000 Ships series about the voyages of Nymeria to HBO. While the series had not been picked up yet, Helgeland revealed that the network was still considering it for a series order. The Man On Fire writer also revealed that the story would have taken inspiration from Moses.

However, with Martin’s recent update, it seems like Helgeland’s version might not be moving forward with Eboni Booth instead taking over writing duties for the spin-off. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if the project indeed moves forward this time around. Nonetheless, given the brief descriptions of Nymeria in the books and her rise to power as the leader of Dorne, establishing Rhoynar supremacy in the region makes for an exciting and fresh new entry in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.
