Since the acquisition of Star Wars by Disney, the iconic franchise has ramped up its output in a big way. While earlier films used to premiere every two-three years, now we have films arriving at least once a year.
After Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed at the summer box office this year, Disney started seriously revising its Star Wars plans. Even Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed this to be the case in a new interview on Disney’s next upcoming wave of ventures. Iger talked about the future of Star Wars and the mistake made by him by pushing the franchise too fast:
“I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”

This should come as good news for those fans who felt fatigued by the number of Star Wars movies released lately like Rogue One, The Force Awakens, Solo, and The Last Jedi as more time in-between releases are pretty much what fans had been demanding. Many fans have even had issues with the quality of newest Star Wars films made by Disney.
It also comes as a surprise to what Iger talked about it, especially when the franchise is expanding in a big way. As indicated by Iger, Game of Thrones showrunner D.B. Weiss and David Benioff already have an original trilogy in the works while Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has his trilogy in development. Jon Favreau is also working on a live-action TV series while an Obi-Wan standalone is reportedly in the works too. Apart from these, a new animated series titled Star Wars: Resistance is about to premiere and Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be returning on the upcoming Disney streaming service.

Directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Frank Oz.

Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now available on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Star Wars: Episode IX is set to release in theatres on December 20th, 2019.
