For Star Wars fans who do not follow the expansive universe other than the movies, Knights of the Old Republic, nicknamed KOTOR, is a beloved 2003 RPG video game first released in 2003 and focuses on the classic Jedi vs. Sith battle set nearly 4000 years prior to the events of the 1997 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

The movie in the works is being written by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, who is best known for writing movies such as 2010’s Shutter Island, 2015’s Terminator Genysis, and 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel as well as episodes for 2007’s Bionic Woman and 2018’s Altered Carbon. Kalogridis has also executive produced movies such as 2009’s Avatar and 2018’s The House With a Clock in Its Walls.

A Knights of the Old Republic movie was teased last month at Star Wars Celebration by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy when asked about the property.

Knights of the Old Republic will reportedly be a trilogy with Kalogridis close to finishing the script for the three movies. This will make her the first female director to work on a Star Wars movie since 1986’s Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

While the next trilogy in the mainstream Star Wars saga is set to begin in 2022, helmed by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, this KOTOR trilogy looks set to be a spin-off trilogy in the same sector of the Star Wars franchise as recent critical hit Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In the KOTOR game, players help fight an uprising against the Republic, led by the villainous Sith Lord, Darth Malak. Players eventually join forces with Bastila Shan, a Jedi Knight, and one of the most revered female characters in the Star Wars extended universe.

The next Star Wars movie to be released is Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, which will see the nine-movie Skywalker saga reach its conclusion.
