Fans of Deadpool & Wolverine were in for a treat during the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham, which premiered on May 23. Ryan Reynolds‘ sports documentary featured his business partner Rob McElhenney‘s arrival on the Deadpool set in London. Fans did not get to see much of the set due to the blurring of the footage, but they still got one fantastic update.

McElhenney, known for his acting roles in FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and AppleTV+’s Mythic Quest, has landed a cameo role in the upcoming MCU film. McElhenney is also a creator of both of these comedy series and fans are excited about his addition to the Deadpool 3 cast.

In the Welcome to Wrexham Season 3 episode, Reynolds shared that McElhenney was invited to the set to discuss Wrexham matters due to his busy schedule. When he offered a role in the film to the Fargo actor, he immediately took it up.

Shawn Levy can be seen in the footage, really excited to have McElhenney on the set. Reynolds shared that he couldn’t reveal the character played by McElhenney as he feared being shot down by the “Marvel drone”. To make matters more interesting, the Lost actor wore a huge jacket to hide his costume while Reynolds appeared in his Deadpool costume.

Besides the two joking about McElhenney’s role in the film, they also discussed other Wrexham matters and even celebrated a fan’s 100th birthday. Fans of the sports documentary received another good news just a few days ago — the series has been renewed for a fourth season (via Deadline).

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC in September 2020 (via The Guardian). They formed the company RR McReynolds in November 2020 to seal the deal on their joint venture. At the time of purchase, the team was in a struggling phase. They played in the fifth tier of the English football league system.

According to the series, Wrexham AFC was grossly mismanaged before 2011 almost to the point of no return, when the Wrexham Supporters Trust took over the ownership. When the 2019-20 National League was suspended due to COVID-19, the club faced a “threat to their continued existence” (via BBC Sport).

Under Reynolds and McElhenney, fans and finance flowed back into the club. With their win over Boreham Wood on April 22, 2023, Wrexham achieved promotion to League Two. They became National League champions and marked their return to the English Football League after a 15-year absence.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney also purchased a minority stake in Club Necaxa in return for the backers of the club purchasing 5% of Wrexham AFC (via Sportico). According to BBC Sport, they are also part of an investor group that bought a 24% equity stake in the Alpine F1 Team.

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
