Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been mired in controversy, even before the main characters were revealed. People felt the game would be another generic Ubisoft title, featuring a massive map bloated with surface-level quests that offer no real enjoyment.

However, it seems the studio is learning from the feedback and also taking some lessons from its previous release, Mirage. Not only is the map going to be more contained, but the game is going to incentivize the player to switch up their playstyle regularly.

Weapons to Offer Unique Animations and Skills in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Every game in the franchise, ever since Assassin’s Creed 2, has offered several weapons for the player to use. The list of options exploded when Ubisoft switched to the RPG formula for their games in Origins. Players have since been spoiled for choice in these games, but it’s not been the best approach.

Fans have criticized the game for taking the quantity over quality route. While there are dozens of weapons, they all feature the same moveset, making them just cosmetically different. Assassin’s Creed Shadows may have finally fixed this issue.

A recent tweet from Jorraptor has revealed several details of the upcoming project, with one detail speaking specifically about weapon usage. It’s stated that every weapon will have a unique assassination and that the player needs to unlock these in the game. Players can unlock these special assassinations by progressing the weapon’s skill tree through consistent use.

Examples of this would be the Rush assassination with the Kusarigama, which allows Naoe to use her sickle and chain to latch onto an enemy and even clear gaps in between them for a long-range takedown. Another example was the Shoji assassination, where the shinobi used her Katana to stab an enemy through a screen door. Ubisoft has taken it a step further, including animation of the character equipping the necessary weapon to use in that specific scenario.

Fan Favorite Skill to Return in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Along with unique takedowns for every weapon, a signature skill from the Ezio series will make a comeback. Ever since Origins, players have been unable to perform double assassinations, but the skill is returning in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, even this might not be enough to make fans stop criticizing Yasuke’s combat for being clunky and without any impact.

We will also be getting a smaller map, one that Jorraptor says should be similar to the size of Origin’s map. That was still a fairly sizable area, but far smaller than what we got with Odyssey and Valhalla. The dynamic weather system should also keep the vistas fresh, and hopefully, the side quests are more interesting and substantial.

Keeping aside the controversy regarding the game’s protagonist, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is facing backlash for what the studio has shown so far as well. Many feel the game looks unpolished and is an inferior clone of Ghost of Tsushima. The pricing of the game goes all the way up to $130, so Ubisoft is going to have to work hard to make the title a success.
