Demon Slayer fans have pointed out a possible pothole in the series. Muzan should have been able to find Ubuyashiki, but why couldn’t he? The reason lies with the man who was in charge of the Demon Slayer Corps before Kagaya.

The answer is not revealed in the actual manga or anime but in an extra in volume 21 of the manga. According to the author, the previous leader was attacked by Kokushibo, the Upper-Rank Moon 1. The demon attacked the Corps’ mansion, killed the previous head (who was also Kagaya’s father), and brought his head to Muzan.

Ever since then, the Oyakata’s residence has always been under strict security. This led to the formation of Kakushi, the brigade who worked as Demon Slayer Corps attendants. Their tasks consist of providing first aid, cleaning up the battlefield as well as serving as attendants to the Butterfly Mansion’s residents. The brigade thus provided assistance in hiding the location of Ubuyashiki, the Corps as well as the Swordsmith Village.

The villain eventually did find Ubuyashiki with the help of Nakime. After receiving Muzan’s blood, Nakime’s detection abilities increased, which helped her track down Ubuyashiki by following several Corps members.

By breaking the leader of the corps, Muzan thought he would be able to weaken the foundation of the Demon Slayers and Hashiras. The deteriorating health of Ubuyashiki was due to Muzan’s association with his clan. Since a monster was birthed in their bloodline, they were cursed to have children who wouldn’t live too long. Thus, Ubuyashiki’s lifetime was greatly diminished. In fact, when Muzan did find him, he was already dying and bedridden.

Kagaya initiated an explosion to take Muzan off-guard and thus ended up sacrificing himself for the sake of the Demon Slayer Corps.
