After seeing the trailer, fans are excited to trace the origin story of beloved characters like Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. However, keen-eyed viewers also noticed an easter egg signaling a potential return or cameo of another legendary Gear that played a significant role during Emergence Day.

The E-Day trailer is nothing short of gut-wrenching nostalgia. Featuring Marcus and Dom in their younger days when all hell broke loose, backed by a somber rendition of “Mad World,” it’s clear why fans of the series rejoiced the moment this trailer finished its run.

At the trailer’s 00:42 mark, however, many noticed how, as Marcus fumbled around for something to fight the single Locust soldier, a figurine of Cole Train from his Thrashball days can be seen. It’s the cheekiest, most fan-servicey way of mentioning the character, and the easter egg has certainly not gone unnoticed, given how fans are now madly speculating on whether we’ll see Cole return in this game in some shape or form.

Now, the inclusion of Cole Train in this trailer can be seen as a simple tribute to the older games for the fans and a way to enhance E-Day‘s nostalgic appeal. Given his role during the Emergence Day, though, it raises the question of whether we’ll see the character make either a full-fledged return or a cameo of sorts.

There’s a Reason Why This Cheeky Cameo of Cole Train Matters

Gus may not make a proper appearance in Gears of War: E-Day, but that's not to say others wouldn't.
Gus may not make a proper appearance in Gears of War: E-Day, but that’s not to say others wouldn’t.

Here’s a refresher: Gus wasn’t simply a Thrashball legend back in the day but a pivotal figure during Emergence Day. Instead of finishing his final game of Thrashball, he decided to avenge his loved ones and enlist in COG. While not much is known of the time after this and joining the Delta Squad on their doomed journey, his impact helped even the odds, even if just a little.

Thanks to his massive popularity and encouragement, this event led to a staggering 390% jump in voluntary enlistment for the COG, highlighting his impact beyond the battlefield.

However, despite having such a crucial role, the character may not make a full-fledged return to the series, as, during this particular period, he was most likely unfamiliar with what would eventually constitute Delta squad’s members. Hence, the likelihood of a cameo is much higher.

At the end of the day, it was heartwarming for Coalition to acknowledge Gus with E-Day‘s trailer. Even if he doesn’t return, it will not remove him from his position as one of the series’ fan favorites.
