In the expansive world of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring, the player stumbles across many different characters, some of whom they adore and many others they despise. Furthermore, one particular NPC that has managed to stand out from the rest is Mohg, the Lord of Blood, and it seems players might have judged his character way too early.
The demigod boss found in Mohgwyn’s palace was earlier recognized as the kidnapper of Miquella the kind, an empyrean offspring of Queen Marika and Radagon. While Mohg is generally painted in a negative light and recognized as an abductor who performed grotesque rituals on the empyrean’s motionless cocoon, the recent Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has another story to tell.

While every player has acknowledged the Omen demigod as the big bad villain, the game’s extension has brought with it answers as to why he would abduct Miquella from the Haligtree in the first place, and the answer is that he did it against his will.
Something that has been speculated on for a long time is how the Empyrean, cursed with eternal youth, controls the actions of others against their will. Luckily, this has now finally been confirmed to be true, as hinted in the item description of Miquella’s Great Rune.
A Great Rune relinquished by Miquella. Broken and bereft of its bounty, it retains naught but the power to resist charms. Miquella set off for the tower enshrouded by shadow, abandoning everything—his golden flesh, his blinding strength, even his fate. All in an effort to bury the original sin. To embrace the whole of it, and be reborn as a new god.
The great rune left behind by Miquella in an attempt to cleanse himself of who he once was indicates how it now holds nothing but the power to resist charms, which in this case refers to Miquella’s ability to charm his way through and make others follow him against their wills.
How Shadow of the Erdtree’s Most Unique Attack Can Only Be Countered by the Empyrean’s Great Rune
Progressing in the DLC will ultimately result in the player finding themselves atop the Enir-Ilim in a one-last stand against Radahn, a demigod that players have encountered beforehand as well. Furthermore, he is accompanied by Miquella on his back during the latter half of the fight, making the two a formidable duo to fight against.
What makes this particular battle interesting is how it introduces a new and unique way for the player to lose. While having the Empyrean twin on his back, the gravity-controlling demigod will often attempt a grab attack, which, if successfully executed twice, will result in the player succumbing to Miquella’s charm and bowing down on one knee in an act of worship.
For the player, the only remaining counter to this attack is to equip and use Miquella’s Great Rune after being grabbed by Radahn once. This will remove the accumulating charm effect and provide the tarnished with an opportunity to fight and live another day.
