Since its first reveal in 2023, Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree has been a topic of discussion for the entire gaming industry. Fans of the franchise wondered how FromSoftware could evolve the iconic Soulslike formula with such a DLC. The community’s interest only pushed further in the weeks leading up to the expansions’ release, which boosted Elden Ring’s player count again.
Even though the expectations for the DLC were sky-high, it seems like Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team haven’t had any trouble meeting or even surpassing them! FromSoftware has announced that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has managed to hit a milestone that other developers can only dream of!
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Sells 5 Million Units in Just Three Days
Even though it hasn’t been a smooth ride for Shadow of the Erdtree, the DLC has proven to be a massive commercial success for FromSoftware and Bandai Namco, and it’s undoubtedly surpassing everyone’s expectations.
Elden Ring‘s official Twitter/X account has announced that Shadow of the Erdtree has managed to sell over 5 million copies. The DLC was such a huge success that it managed to reach such a milestone within just three days of its launch last week.
FromSoftware is celebrating the notable sales milestone by thanking the expansion’s many players for their continued support of the Elden Ring franchise. However, Shadow of the Erdtree still has a long way to go before it catches up to the base game, which has sold over 25 million copies as of June 2024.
Since Shadow of the Erdtee‘s release, Elden Ring has seen a huge spike in the number of players, as reported by SteamDB. On June 22, the game managed to gain over 700,000 concurrent players. Although its peak has declined since, it’s still going strong.
The developers have also released an patch for Shadow of the Erdtree that addresses recent criticism over its difficulty by buffing Scadutree Blessings.
Where Does Elden Ring Go From Here?
Unfortunately, no more expansions will be released for Elden Ring after Shadow of the Erdtree. Before the DLC’s release, Elden Ring‘s game director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, confirmed that FromSoftware has no plans to add more content to the game after June 2024 beyond the inevitable patches to keep the game stable.
Shadow of the Erdtree is likely the largest expansion in FromSoftware’s development history, and Miyazaki most probably wants to move on to other titles that the studio could add to its long list of achievements. Even though a DLC is completely ruled out, there’s still a chance Miyazaki could surprise us with an Elden Ring sequel.
