Saber Interactive has very big shoes to fill and looks like they are making bolder moves by taking the series more into a grittier route. Recently, Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick hinted that they are honoring the old titles but are going to showcase their creativity. They might even remove some races.

The original Space Marine was widely acclaimed for its engaging narrative, adrenaline-filled combat, and keeping in touch with the Warhammer universe. Players were able to battle against many enemies, which include the races of Orks and Chaos forces.

For long-time Warhammer 40K fans, the removal of any races in Space Marine 2 would be a significant blow, as they have seen and battled them for years. However, in an interview, Director Oliver Hollis-Leick was asked about what their approach was to making a sequel for a genre classic title like Space Marine. Hollis-Leick expressed his feelings:

To be gifted with the opportunity to tell a new story in that world is an incredible privilege, but it comes with an enormous amount of responsibility. We know the responsibility and we’re taking it very, very seriously.

After further questions and details about the developmental process, Hollis-Leick hinted that the sequel is looking to take a different approach. The team at Saber Interactive is aiming for a tone that is much colder and more brutal than its predecessor. To achieve that they are looking more into creating a game that translates to a modern audience while paying homage to the original.

The first one with the Cockney Orks had more of a subtle cartoonish element to it, a comic book feel perhaps. This [Space Marine 2] version feels more real, harsher, bolder. I would call it a maturation of the original game.

The Warhammer universe is renowned for its rich lore and diverse factions, each with its own unique characteristics. From the director’s words, it seems like some elements from the original game, which looks more cartoonish (Cockney Orks) could be on the chopping block.

As the development process goes further on Space Marine 2, the decisions regarding race and class continue to create some spark among fans. While this is just a speculation from how Hollis-Leick explained, it looks like fans are up for battles of wits. It highlights that the studio is looking to leave its mark on the series

Just imagining a harsher, more realistic portrayal of the Warhammer 40K universe is very intriguing, to say the least. But we have to wait and see how Saber Interactive is going to implement these changes and whether or not fans will like it.

In the end, fans have to wait till September 9th for the release of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 to get all their answers. Let’s hope that Saber Interactive will be able to work its magic and recreate an enjoyable experience.
