George Lucas, who has been deeply connected to the Star Wars franchise, has delivered remarkable projects that garnered significant attention. The sci-fi saga’s immense popularity reflects his hard work. However, while he remains committed to storytelling and filmmaking, he is no longer actively involved in the creative direction of the franchise post-sale to Disney.

Given that Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) was the last project that he directed in the franchise, many fans are wondering about his return. With what Lucasfilm’s boss recently told in an interview, it seems there is still hope for his return.

Lucasfilm Boss Dave Filoni Commented on George Lucas’s Return to Direct Star Wars Project

George Lucas has been actively involved in the creative process of the Galaxy, far far away. However, back in 2012, things changed when he handed over the ownership of Lucasfilm to Disney. Since then, he had minimal creative involvement post-sale to the House of Mouse.

As fans wonder about his possible future involvement as a director on the Star Wars project, Lucasfilm CCO, Dave Filoni addressed the same, commenting on his potential return.

While having a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Filoni gave a very subtle response as he joked that the franchise creator could come by anytime as they’re practically renting his building in Skywalker Ranch.

He stated,

We rent the building I work in from George. He has the keys, anyway. He can come right in, he has the pass.

He added,

Whatever he’ll come up with, it will be different. He was always surprising on whatever he will do and how he would push things.

Although this didn’t entirely clarify fans’ doubts about his return, Filoni is still keeping an optimistic approach to the door open if Lucas has an idea that he wants to push.

As for when the creator was last seen in the helming position for the saga project, it was Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, released in 2005. It is the final installment of the prequel trilogy, with the first two being The Phantom Menace (1999) and Attack of the Clones (2002).

The final installment of the prequel trilogy revolves around the origins of Darth Vader and the rise of the Galactic Empire. Despite gaining criticism for Lucas’s screenplay and Hayden Christensen’s performance, it still remains one of the strongest entries in the saga. From the emotional depth it served to the audience to breathtaking visuals, it gave its best shot, making it more special for fans.

Compared to its predecessor, the final installment is darker and more mature, featuring themes of loss and betrayal as Anakin Skywalker transforms into Darth Vader.

What’s more interesting is the iconic lightsaber duels, especially between Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi, which continue to remain fan favorites. Not just that, the movie also did a commendable job of showcasing the complexities of characters.

The movie further gave a satisfying conclusion to the prequel trilogy while setting the stage for the beloved original trilogy. Given that this was the last project that Lucas helmed, it makes it better as the creator himself made efforts to create something that contributed to sustaining the franchise’s iconic legacy.

Revenge of the Sith is available to watch on Disney+.
