Now, HBO has reportedly begun filming for yet another prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While filming happens in Belfast, the author mentioned that the series would debut in 2025. Based on his novella The Hedge Knight, which is part of a spinoff series of novellas called the Tales of Dunk and Egg, George R.R.Martin recently revealed that the prequel show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms began filming in Belfast earlier that week. Following the tales of Ser Duncan the Tall, the series has cast Peter Claffey as Dunk.

In his blog post, Martin mentioned that the show would be airing in 2025, only a year after the current season of House of the Dragon ends. However, he made a small change in his post from when he first posted it. The author reportedly first mentioned the release window as ‘early 2025’ but seems to have now changed it to just ‘2025’.

While Forbes reported the news with the ‘early 2025’ release window, the change in the date seems to give the meaning that the series might be delayed. The earlier window put the release of the new series within six months of House of the Dragon, which will end its current season in August.

With George R.R. Martin’s penchant for delaying his works, it might worry fans of the franchise that they would have to wait for a longer time as the new release window could mean mid-2025 or in the later months.

George R.R. Martin Says A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Has Less Source Material

One of the differences between other shows in the franchise and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is that the latter will reportedly have only six episodes. A much smaller storyline than the other shows’ extensive 8-episode arcs, George R.R. Martin attributed the lesser episode count to the show being based on a novella.

Despite the novella, The Hedge Knight being part of a series of more stores featuring Dunk and Egg, the prequel series seems to be only following the first one. Martin wrote in his blog,

Filming started last week in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where much of the original GAME OF THRONES was shot. Based on my novella The Hedge Knight, the new show will debut in 2025. Only six episodes for this one. A novella is considerably shorter than a novel (particularly one of my novels), so there’s less source material.

Martin has reportedly also mentioned in the past that he wants to continue the series of novellas, three of which have been released for now. HBO might be testing the waters with the first season and then proceed to adapt the other books for subsequent seasons.
