SUMMARY

  • Video games, especially RPGs are incredibly popular nowadays.
  • Reddit is a place for gamers to come together and share encounters.
  • Both of these reasons were probably why an indvidiual posted on Reddit, and shared that they were called an NPC by a Chipotle employee.

NPCs are one of the most crucial elements in a video game, especially in RPG games, mainly because RPGs are usually meant to help people escape reality. This is done by offering a prosperous world to explore.

Even after considering the popularity of video games, one wouldn’t expect to feel like an NPC when visiting a casual restaurant like Chipotle, and that too by one of the employees. Unfortunately, that happened to a Redditor, who, in attempts to find respite, posted the cringeworthy encounter online.

The NPC, Chipotle, and a Subpar Charisma Skill Tree

NPCs can be clever or robotic, but no one ever wants to be called one.

As most gamers may be aware, NPCs are an acronym for non-player characters in a video game. It is an umbrella term that spans all of the characters in a video game apart from the protagonist. Barring a couple of RPGs where these characters are known to be clever and lifelike, most aren’t given a lot of lines, individuality, and nuance.

That is precisely why, in recent times, the acronym is used as slang by factoring in the simulation hypothesis in philosophy to refer to someone who is predictable or has a bland personality. While it may not sound like the most offensive thing in the world, an individual found themself in a fix when they were called an NPC by a Chipotle employee. Taking to Reddit, the individual shared their experience and stated the following:

Apparently I order an “NPC Burrito”

The entire encounter sounds like something that would be perfect for explaining second-hand embarrassment to someone unaware of the time. But, it is only natural for someone to find it unpleasant when someone calls them or their choices ‘NPC type.’

How Fellow Chipotle Enjoyers and RPG Enthusiasts Reacted to the ‘NPC Type Burrito’ Incident

'Press X to skip dialogue' is a famous prompt offered during dialogue with NPCs.

Reddit is a strange place, and it is a platform where most, if not all, the users are under an alias and, hence, do not mince any words. Whether it is highlighting what they think is wrong with their favorite game or sharing genuine insights, the platform is used by gamers to engage in discussions that may or may not involve banter.

Unlucky for OP, who was probably expecting some backup from fellow members of the Chipotle subreddit, someone commented something that looked straight out of an Elder Scrolls game. The comment further cemented why the Chipotle employees in the story called OP:

But the first-degree discomfort for OP didn’t stop as another RPG enthusiast alleged that it was perhaps OP’s fault as he hadn’t spent enough skill points in the Charisma Skill Tree:

This entire encounter and the reaction it prompted from Redditors shows why Reddit is one of the melting pots for gamers with various tastes and preferences to come together. And they do so primarily to poke fun at each other.
