It didn’t take long for Sam Levinson’s Euphoria to gain a huge fan following for itself. Telling a twisted tale of high school and taking things to a whole new level, the series stars Zendaya in the lead role as Rue Bennett, a teenage drug addict struggling to get herself out of this mess. Both seasons have received positive feedback from critics who praised the show for its storyline, visuals, acting, and more.

Fans are eagerly waiting for the third season which was announced all the way back in 2022. However, filming was abrupted due to the unfortunate deaths of actor Angus Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen as well as the Hollywood labor disputes in 2023. Now, season 3 finally got an update about the story but this might prove to be Euphoria’s Achilles’ Heel.

Streaming platform Max was recently launched in France and the CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, JB Perrette, as well as the chairman and CEO of HBO, Casey Bloys, sat down with Variety to discuss the good news.

At one point during their conversation, the attention was turned toward Euphoria and what’s in store for the Zendaya-starrer. When asked “what’s up” with the third season, Bloys replied that Sam Levinson was working on it and had an idea about which direction to take the popular show in.

As per Bloys, Levinson is planning on making a huge time jump in the next season which means that the characters will no longer be in high school. Since the show has always been about the struggles of these high schoolers, Bloys revealed that a lot of “back and forth” has been taking place about how to approach the third season exactly. However, he added that Levinson does have a take that he’s quite hyped about.

Bloys told Variety,

Sam [Levinson] is working on it. There’s been a lot of back and forth … One of the issues I think that Sam is thinking about is that he doesn’t want to have it in high school anymore. That’s where it was set and what made sense then. So when you take it out of that, there’s a lot of back and forth about where to set it and how far in the future to set it and all that stuff. But I think he’s got a take that he’s excited about, and he’s busy writing.

This is a huge gamble for the show that has been doing great with both critics and fans all this time. If Levinson decides to go ahead with the idea, there is a huge chance that the fans will lose interest in Euphoria for good. However, given the creator’s talents and having seen his talent, he just might be able to pull it off. We are just going to have to wait and find out.

The Main Cast Will Return to Euphoria

While it was obvious that the main cast of the show will return for the third season, it is always nice to have an official confirmation from one of those in charge. Variety asked Bloys whether the main cast – Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, and others – will be back.

To this, the executive didn’t have much to say except, “It’s the same core cast.” On the other hand, talking to Variety at the premiere of Challengers in April, Zendaya stated that she would love to return to play Rue if things turned out the way they should.

She stated,

If it’s right for the characters and everything turns out the way it should, of course. But it’s beyond me.

Back in 2023, the Dune actress told Elle that as she gets older, she couldn’t possibly continue playing “a teenager for the rest of” her life. Well, then perhaps Levinson’s idea of a time jump isn’t too bad.
