There’s this wild theory that’s been floating around the Helldivers 2 community for a while now. The theory suggests that these Automatons are not just mindless machines but actual humans being controlled against their will.
It’s a pretty dark and terrifying idea if you think about it, and it has some big implications for the lore of the series.
Helldivers 2 Theory Is a Game Changer
![A new major order for Helldivers 2 has just been released.](https://fwmedia.fandomwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/11121545/Helldivers-2-Major-Order-1-1024x576.webp)
This theory started gaining traction after players noticed some weird details in the game’s lore and missions. There are hints here and there that these Automatons have a human origin. Some in-game documents and voice logs hint at experiments where humans are captured, brainwashed, and then turned into robotic soldiers.
Automatons are beyond creepy

Automatons have some disturbing resemblance to human behavior. They utilize wrist-mounted devices strikingly similar to the Helldivers‘ Stratagem tools, suggesting a potential shared technological base. The voice lines from Democracy Officers also mention a past rebellion by Cyborgs, a potential precursor to the Automatons.
The implications of this theory are huge. If it’s true, it means every time we take down one of these Automatons, we’re actually killing a fellow human who’s been turned into a mindless drone. It adds a whole new layer of horror and tragedy to the game.
The Automatons wouldn’t be mindless drones, but unwilling combatants, forced to turn their guns on their own kin. Of course, this is still just a theory, although a pretty compelling one. Arrowhead, the game’s developer, has remained quiet about the Automatons’ true origins, and only time will reveal more.
Throw all of this together with the latest major order, and it could point to some seriously warped options ahead of the current major order, as one user on Reddit posits.

This may be an unlikely scenario of course, but it’s one to think about.
Helldivers 2 Has Been Going Strong Since Release
![The game still has a very dedicated community of roleplayers.](https://fwmedia.fandomwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/11081532/hd-2-glitch-1024x579.jpg)
Helldivers 2 is the sequel to the fan-favorite squad shooter, which was released on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC earlier this year.
The game retains the core cooperative gameplay that made the original so beloved and fun. Up to four players can squad up and tackle objectives on hostile planets, facing off against waves of alien bugs, cyborgs, and even the threat of friendly fire, making you really pay attention to every action.
A big change from the original top-down view is Helldivers 2’s shift to a third-person perspective. This allows for a more immersive experience, letting players truly appreciate the scale of the battles and the environments they fight in by being able to look around properly. Players can also switch to a first-person view for shooting.
The arsenal and gadgets have been massively expanded in the sequel. New primary weapons, secondary gadgets, and, of course, the ever-important Stratagems, which are orbital support tools that can rain down hellfire or provide tactical advantages, offer players a wider range of options to approach each mission. This variety is actually pretty crucial, as the enemy forces in this game are more diverse and deadlier than before, requiring a lot more strategy.
The Automatons remain the primary antagonists in Helldivers 2. These advanced machines continue to plague the galaxy, and the latest major orders hint at a deeper, more disturbing truth about their origins. Perhaps more will be revealed about this pretty intriguing theory later on.
