As if the origin of the saber in the Sequel Trilogy was not a mystery, Disney provided another shock when we got to see a perfect version of the lightsaber in The Rise of the Skywalker even though it was destroyed at the end of The Last Jedi.

Following the acquisition of Lucasfilm, when Disney released the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, the fan reception was highly polarized. Although Episode VII was very well-received, Episodes VIII and IX were welcomed with abysmal reviews from the audience. The storytelling in the last two parts was criticized for leaving many plot holes.

Daisy Ridley‘s Rey got her hands on the blue lightsaber when she and Han Solo visited Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata’s castle in Takodana in Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Although she tried to return it to Luke, he did not wield it again. But we got to see a fierce Force-based tug-of-war between Rey and Kylo Ren when the latter wanted to acquire it in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

Surprisingly, the blue saber was shown intact at the start of The Rise of Skywalker even though it was destroyed during the fight at the end of Episode VIII. While numerous fans were enraged at not getting a proper explanation, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary (via Screen Rant) clarified that Rey used Force to heal the saber’s Kyber crystal between Episodes VIII and IX. She learned the skills from the sacred Jedi texts given to her by Luke on the planet of Ahch-To.

While this explanation in the tie-in book provided some relief to the fans, they are yet to know how the lightsaber landed in Maz Kanata’s hands before the weapon called Rey.

Looks like we have to wait for another tie-in novel or some other material to address this plothole. While keen fans will keep their eyes open to get any hint regarding it across other Star Wars media, it cannot be denied that The Rise of Skywalker suffered from its attempt to tackle a lot in its limited timeframe.

What do we know about Anakin Skywalker’s blue lightsaber?

For the fans unversed in the Star Wars lore, Anakin Skywalker’s blue lightsaber was used by him in countless iconic battles. While he was familiar with the saber like nobody else, it eventually went to Obi-Wan Kenobi after Anakin fell to the Dark Side. Following the fierce battle at Mustafar in Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, the saber rested with Kenobi before it went to Luke Skywalker.

In Episode IV: A New Hope, an old Obi-Wan Kenobi passed the blue saber to Luke Skywalker. The latter continued his father’s legacy but also lost it during his final duel against Darth Vader on Cloud City. The fans were unaware of the iconic weapon for many years before it was finally shown to be in the basement of Maz Katana’s castle.

The story of the blue saber finally reached its conclusion when Rey defeated Lord Palpatine and buried the weapon in Lars mansion on Tatooine, where Anakin Skywalker grew up. It will be interesting to see if we get to see the lightsaber somewhere again in the live-action Star Wars universe.
