Go Nagai is a Japanese mangaka who has created some of the most classic anime. He is also the mangaka behind Devilman, which later inspired the Devillman Crybaby anime series. In fact, a complete Go Nagai Wonderland Museum was also dedicated to him in 2009.

Kentaro Miura was extremely vocal about his favoritism toward Go Nagai:

I like Mr. Go Nagai, I believe he’s very famous in the U.S. He has a big influence on me. I love his dynamic style.

Kentaro Miura is known for his signature gritty style in Berserk. It is partly because of his extremely hard-to-attempt art style that fans have still not received a true anime adaptation of Berserk yet. According to Miura, he loves the dynamic art style of Nagai, which perhaps had an impact on Berserk as well.

Both Go Nagai and Kentaro Miura have a shaded drawing style where characters are given a lot of depth through extensive use of shadows. Both prefer to fill their subjects rather than to leave more blank areas.

Of course, due to Go Nagai’s works, he had already made a name for himself in the US. Go Nagai was famous for the franchises that were spun from his original works.

2018 ONA, Devilman Crybaby is also inspired by Go Nagai’s manga Devilman. The release of the series was a much-anticipated event, but the episodes were not able to satisfy fans. The biggest problem includes the fact that it has some glaring plot holes.

Many fans have also pointed out pacing issues with the anime. It is not entirely faithful to the manga because it is just an inspired series. However, many fans were expecting a truer adaptation, which made people displeased when it turned out that Devilman Crybaby’s story did not resemble the original series.

Other complaints against the adaptation included late pickup of the plot and underdeveloped characters. Apparently, it did not live up to the extreme hype it was preceded by.
