In a recent set photo, Corenswet’s Superman is seen being arrested by a masked man with a ‘U’ crest on him. While many have speculated him to be Ultraman, the masked man might be the anti-hero Ulysses, and Gunn might use this character to introduce Batman into the DCU.

James Gunn is currently filming the first chapter of his new and improved DCU i.e. Superman. The reboot stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent a.k.a Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and many other actors portraying multiple DC characters. Nicholas Hoult will be portraying Lex Luthor, while Nathan Fillion has been cast as Green Lantern.

As the shoot has progressed, new set photos were unveiled earlier this week, showing a new glimpse at David Corenswet’s Superman suit and a first look at Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific. One of the photos also shows Superman being arrested by a masked man in a fully black suit with a ‘U’ on his crest. Many have speculated it to be Ultraman.

However, another theory by X user Dave the Anoite suggests that the masked man is not Ultraman but Ulysses a.k.a Neil Quinn. Ulysses clashes with Superman in Geoff Johns’ Superman Vol. 3 series of comics where the anti-hero tries to create the Great World, a utopia that does not have the issues that Earth has.

While Ultraman was rumored to be the main villain of James Gunn’s Superman according to Daniel RPK, the filmmaker may be going with someone more underrated and underrepresented like Ulysses. Gunn is known for introducing lesser-known characters into the mainstream like he did in Guardians of the Galaxy.

James Gunn announced multiple titles for the DCU slate, with Superman being the first chapter. While Creature Commandos will be preceding the upcoming film, there have been other film announcements as well, including a Bat-family film titled The Brave and the Bold, which is set to be directed by Andy Muschietti.

There has been no casting for Batman yet, however, if the fan theory of Ulysses making an appearance in Superman is true, Gunn might get the perfect chance to introduce the caper crusader. The Superman Vol. 3 storyline sees Ulysses and Superman clash after the destruction of the Great World, enabling Superman to activate his solar flare power.

After the solar flare puts both him and Ulysses out of action, Superman wakes up in Batman’s lair and the latter convinces him to sort it out with the anti-hero. Gunn has the perfect chance to bring Batman into the DCU with this storyline.

Though the filmmaker has yet to confirm whether the masked man is Ultraman or Ulysses, the latter theory would be an exciting direction to go in.

Superman is set to release on July 11, 2025.
