Kaley Cuoco had a firm opinion about working with kids while starring in The Big Bang Theory. Throughout her journey as Penny in the sitcom, her character underwent a notable evolution, culminating in the series finale where Penny and Leonard’s relationship took a new turn with the revelation of Penny’s pregnancy.
The narrative surprised many, as Penny did not want to be a mother initially. The unexpected turn also caught the actress off guard, who had expressed that this wasn’t the direction she had anticipated for her character. Despite her reservations, the actress eventually accepted the decision for the fans of the show.
Kaley Cuoco And Johnny Galecki Did Not Expect Penny to be Pregnant
The Big Bang Theory concluded with a surprise twist for fans. Penny’s consistent denial about wanting to be a mother throughout the final season made the revelation of her pregnancy surprising for both fans and the cast.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco reflected on this unexpected turn, saying that they did not expect such a development in the series finale.
“The pregnancy shocked me,” said Galecki. And the Charmed actress also shared similar apprehensions about the surprise element, as she shared during her interview for The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.
I actually wished that they did not [make Penny pregnant] because I loved that message [of Penny not wanting kids] so much. I was actually voting for her not to [get pregnant].
However, the showrunners described it as a way of ensuring a satisfying conclusion for the audience. The Roseanne actor emphasized the same as he shared, “The main takeaway is that these friendships will continue.”
They essentially aimed to ensure that the relationship among the characters would endure and convey to the fans that the bonds of friendship and love portrayed in the series would continue to be strong and meaningful.
Kaley Cuoco Did Not Want to Work With Kids on The Big Bang Theory
One of the reasons Kaley Cuoco was hesitant about Penny having children in The Big Bang Theory was because didn’t enjoy working with kids. In an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actress explained her reluctance.
“I hope not, I don’t like working with kids,” she said, clarifying that while she loves kids, she just doesn’t like the idea of working with them, as it could be pretty challenging.
I don’t like working with kids. I like kids, I don’t want to work with them. Babies are really tough to work with. They’re the biggest divas, people carry them in, and they only work like six minutes.
The actress further elaborated on the different norms and dynamics between working with kids and adults. “I just feel like the babies can do whatever the hell they want, and I don’t think that’s fair,” she told the late-night talk show host.
However, despite her initial concerns about her character’s development into an expectant mother, Cuoco admitted she was surprised by the storyline but believed that Penny and Leonard would make great parents.
