Forget alien invasions and supervillain showdowns! The biggest battle in The Avengers was fought not by heroes, but by… fashion? Chris Evans’ Captain America suit, in Joss Whedon’s 2012 masterpiece, turned out to be a villain in disguise.

While the movie smashed box office records, the suit left fans and even Evans himself cringing. Was this a superhero suit, or a reject from a 90s sci-fi convention?

Joseph (Hill) Whedon’s The Avengers was a superhero game-changer. Skillfully combining disparate storylines into a cinematic masterpiece, the Marvel movie was awarded for its character development, humor, and action. Yet, amidst all-things-good, one detail became a curious sore thumb: Captain America’s suit.

Chris Evans’ Captain America was supposed to be the film’s heroic centerpiece. Shouldn’t his suit embody that image? Instead, it became a point of fan and critic fixation. The costume, intended to modernize Cap’s classic look (remember, this was 2012!), ended up an oddity in the sleek film.

The stiffness of Evans’ suit even became meme-material. One X user tweeted, “I’m now noticing how ugly that suit is,” while another called it “an insane downgrade.” Ouch.

Complaints focused on the tight, uncomfortable fit (and, geez, that unnaturally shiny appearance?) All of this quite literally clashed with the other characters’ more realistic costumes. Iron Man’s suit boasted a hi-tech finish, Thor’s evoked mythical grandeur, an Cap’s… well, it looked like a cheap cosplay effort.

These reactions highlight a major flaw (that could’ve been avoided) in an otherwise spectacularly well-received film. Angry fan posts flooded the internet, especially from those who’d aspired to be Captain America as kids. Did Whedon, in his quest for a modern update, miss the mark entirely? The answer seems to be a resounding “yes.” While the film itself soared, Captain America’s suit remained grounded–in a sea of criticism.

Super troopers, make way for Mr. Handsome Evans, who has a new mission: married bliss! At the Vanity Fair afterparty following Academy Awards 2024, the Captain America superhero finally made his red carpet debut with his wife, Alba Baptista.

As the couple sat for pictures, Evans looked stunning in a red suit, and Baptista looked sizzling in a black-and-white gown. Also, that diamond necklace she’d donned? Phew! The couple’s September wedding, however, was anything but an “Avengers Assemble” event. Evans and Baptista chose to have two small weddings, one in her home country of Portugal and the other on Cape Cod. Arranging festivals on different continents? It seems like a logistical achievement fit for Captain America!

Charming as always, Evans may be accustomed to saving the world, but it appears that organizing a wedding comes with its own set of challenges. He told supporters, “It’s a lot of work” (via People). Evans claims that now that the festivities have passed, they’re “enjoying life, gearing up for autumn”—apparently his favorite season—and are just unwinding. To the happy couple, congratulations!
