The past few years have been far from how things should have turned out for movie studios. It would be wrong to suggest that we have not come across any blockbuster movie, but it is no secret that we’ve failed to witness a repeat of the exploits that was a characteristic of the pre COVID days. In spite of everything, in an era highlighted by the lackluster performance of movies across the board, there is a genre that has managed to script a comeback – animated flicks.
Animated movies are so back
Even Joe Russo, the man behind Avengers: Endgame had to plead that theatre fatigue was a thing, with fans failing to learn to appreciate anything that was longer than 30 seconds. If that is the case, you know that we’re living in dull times.
But that didn’t matter to the helmers of Inside Out 2. The long awaited sequel to Disney’s 2015 flick witnessed the addition of a new feeling, Anxiety to the fold. The unfolding story has managed to win fans’ hearts equally, going on to make over $720 million.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’s success might have paved the way for future Shrek movies
The $720 million also means that Inside Out 2 is the highest grossing film this year, leaving behind the likes of Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: New Empire. What is more shocking about this statistic is the fact that the animated flick has breached the mark in the span of a couple of weeks. But this ain’t the first time an animated movie is showing stellar numbers.
Back in 2022, when directors were still wary of releasing films in theatres, a certain animated movie by the name of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish took the world by storm. It was a success on two fronts, gaining critical acclaim while also grossing over $485 million worldwide on a budget of $90-110 million. It was one of the better performing films of the year after all. And the success of the Puss in Boots sequel seems to have spurred on DreamWorks to take on another Shrek spin-off.
Eddie Murphy is all set to release a spin-off revolving around Donkey following Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Eddie Murphy had some good news for Shrek fans around the world – we might be in line for witnessing the return of our favorite ogre. 15 years since, we’ve last seen him in action, Shrek and Co. are all set to return and enthrall fans with Shrek 5. But that isn’t all. The success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has led the studio to wonder about the possibility of another spin-off, one revolving around everyone’s beloved character, Donkey.

While it is anyone’s guess what was going on behind Eddie Murphy’s mind, the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish ought to have been one of the things on his mind. A trend that has not been lost on movie buffs, coming out with Animated flicks has proved to be a rewarding decision. No wonder the Beverley Hills Cop thought it best to take advantage of the situation while he still can.
