Bringing an end to Hugh Jackman’s career as Wolverine (or so we thought) Logan is a film that is close to many superhero fans’ hearts. The 2017 film was highly anticipated and to this day, is considered to be an absolute masterpiece. However, even years after the film’s release, there were some things about Logan that remained a mystery to fans. But worry not as director James Mangold once revealed some of the film’s secrets.
During a watch party event, James Mangold opened up about the things that went on behind the scenes while filming Logan and shared a few photos of the days on his Twitter account. However, what caught our attention the most was his discussion of the final and heartbreaking moment of the film – when Logan finally succumbs to his death at the hands of X-24.
James Mangold Talks about Logan’s Final Scene
Hosted by Comicbook.com, ‘Quarantine Watch Party’ (via The Hollywood Reporter) once saw James Mangold getting into the nitty-gritty of Logan. He eventually ends up addressing the final scene where Hugh Jackman’s Logan meets his end at the hand of X-24, a mindless clone of himself.
Before Logan succumbs to his injuries, he sees that his daughter, Laura a.k.a X-23 (Dafne Keene) has shot X-24 with an adamantium bullet, killing him instantly. Soon after, Laura and Logan share a heartfelt moment with each other before he finally passes away.
Talking about Logan as a character, Mangold stated,
“I wanted the Logan that felt love to be essentially weaker than the version who did not feel anything.”
As for why they decided to have Laura kill X-24 instead of Logan himself, Mangold revealed that it was all for a very genius reason.
“I wanted his daughter to have the final word as the world was hers now. Logan was essentially trying to kill his own past in the end, the dark legacy of Weapon X and all the pain he had caused when he was a killing machine. I felt it had to be the best of himself that crushed this demon. And the best of himself was in the form of his daughter.”
He also wanted Jackman, who had given so many years to Wolverine, to leave the character on a note of love and tenderness.
“In the end, I felt that the greatest tribute we could offer this great character created by this great actor was to allow him to leave this world after 200-plus years of pain in a moment of love and tenderness.”
Honestly, there couldn’t have been a better ending to Logan!
Hugh Jackman Recalls His Final Moments as Wolverine
Jackman’s Wolverine is one of the finest portrayals of a Marvel character on the big screen. His phenomenal stint lasted for 9 films in 17 long years, & ended with a beautiful, yet tragic scene in Logan. While Jackman is once again returning to play the mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine, there was a time when even he thought that Logan was the end.
In a fascinating conversation with Variety, Jackman credited the role for teaching him “So much over those years.”
He shared:
“I feel so blessed to have the part, and I’m taking on a character that’s so beloved to so many. I’ll commit to that every day of the week, right? I’ll give 110%.”
The Deadpool & Wolverine star was deeply touched by the final few minutes of the beloved character’s life.
He said,
“The last scene of Logan, for example, where my character is dying, I think [there’s] one of the most beautiful lines written for the character, which is, ‘Ah, so this is what it feels like.’
Thankfully, incessant fan demand for the character has led to his return in the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, releasing on the 26th of July, 2024.
