Daisy Ridley rose to global prominence when she was cast as the scavenger-turned-Jedi, Rey, in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Her fame also brought her a fair share of haters and Ridley had been open about her struggles with the brutal trolls from the Star Wars fandom for her role. However, Ridley is all set to make a comeback in another Star Wars movie, helmed by two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The Disney Star Wars features are being brutally obliterated by fans, particularly the latest project from the franchise The Acolyte. However, Ridley’s project may have hope after all as the filmmaker revealed that she had sought blessings from the big guns — George Lucas, Dave Filoni, and J.J. Abrams.

Daisy Ridley was almost ready to move on from her Star Wars role when she was pulled back into it with a tempting offer from Lucasfilm. She was convinced to take on the role after attending the Star Wars Celebration in April 2023, where she got a grand reception (via Collider). It was announced that Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was helming the project.

Fans were not exactly as excited as Ridley for the project. Obaid-Chinoy was an activist and journalist who won the Oscars two times for her two documentaries, that covered the topic of gender inequalities in society. Fans believed that Disney was bringing on the director to further its propaganda politics. However, the director’s latest comments may make some fans happy.

During an interview with Sirius XM, Obaid-Chinoy opened up about her upcoming Star Wars project. She revealed that she was doing her research for the film. She has had conversations with all the major filmmakers who have worked on a Star Wars project, including George Lucas. She also spoke to J.J. Abrams and Dave Filoni regarding the project.

Obaid-Chinoy made it clear that these conversations were not a one-off thing. She added that she talked to them very often. She also shared that she has a great team at Disney and Lucasfilm to pull off the project. All they needed to do was to do justice to the story of Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Obaid-Chinoy told Sirius XM:

I’ve had conversations with JJ Abrams. I’ve had conversations with George Lucas and, of course, Dave Filoni, who is a big part of the Star Wars universe now. We speak very often, and Kathy Kennedy, Carrie Beck, and Simon Emanuel – I think the team is really taking time to make sure that we do justice to telling the story of Daisy.

According to Variety, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was roped in to write the new film for Obaid-Chinoy. He replaced Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson as the screenwriter in March 2023. Lindelof and Britt-Gibson had already written a first draft of the story.

Daisy Ridley’s character Rey (or is she Rey Skywalker?) will attempt to build a new Jedi order in the upcoming film. During an interview with IGN, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy provided hints about the direction of Obaid-Chinoy’s new Star Wars film. According to Kennedy, the film will be set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The story will explore Rey’s character as a Jedi mentor who looks to rebuild the Jedi Order based on the teachings found in the books. Kennedy shared that it was a promise that Rey had made to Luke Skywalker. She explained to IGN:

Well, we’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books… based on what she promised Luke. So, that’s where we’re going.

In the interview, she also shut down the rumors of Luke’s Force ghost making an appearance in the film. According to Kennedy, the new film will solely ride on Ridley’s character, rather than dwelling on flashbacks of the previous films.

The untitled film is expected to hit the theaters in 2026.
