Hideo Kojima’s exit from Konami in 2015 is one of the biggest mysteries in the world. Aside from a bunch of rumors, we still have no confirmation regarding the reason behind one of the industry’s most brilliant minds leaving behind the company he’d worked at since the start of his video game career.

It looks like Konami might be regretting what happened, however, after a recent live stream showed the current Metal Gear Solid team expressing interest in working with the director again.

Since the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami has been going hard on the marketing. Recently, it held a live stream with some of the game’s staff members to share some information about it and answer questions.

One of the questions asked was regarding whether any of the original staff members of the franchise would return to work on, co-develop, or supervise any of the games in the future.

Production Producer Noriaka Okamura laughed a little and mentioned it was a difficult question, explaining it’s not up to him to answer how someone outside of the company might feel about it. He then says:

Personally, I’d like nothing better than to work with Mr. Kojima and the rest of the team again. If that could happen, that would be the dream.

It’s surprising to hear a direct mention of Kojima, how Konami attempted to erase his name from the series in 2015 before it was even announced that he had left.

That being said, having Hideo Kojima work on another entry into the franchise is the ultimate wish for many fans of the franchise. It’s highly unlikely, but a little wishful thinking never hurt anyone.

Would Kojima Work With Konami Ever Again?

The answer is that it’s an almost zero percent chance. | Image Credit: Konami

It feels like the staff at Konami already know what Kojima might say if he were to be asked to work on Metal Gear Solid. Unless, answering this question was actually a silent cry for help as they’ve already contacted him and got a rejection, which is my tinfoil hat conspiracy theory for the day. Okamura continues:

…but people have moved on to new things and new commitments, and that’s just our current reality. We can’t just take it for granted that everyone would work with us again, or let ourselves be completely dependent on them.

Unless a miracle happens, this collaboration may never happen again. Konami closed a door after parting with Kojima, and we’ll never know what could’ve become with their continued partnership.

Of course, this is a bigger loss for Konami than Kojima. While the creative director struggled to find a publisher at the start, his studio is currently doing great.

Death Stranding was an absolute hit, a sequel is on the way, and his new IP Overdose is also being worked on.
