Although David Corenswet as Superman under the supervision of James Gunn for the new DCU wasn’t something that was entertained quite finely by fans at the beginning, things seem to be constantly changing for the actor. This is because some updates about what could be expected to be seen in this upcoming film have turned out to be incredibly promising for fans.

For instance, one exclusive sneak-peak from the sets of this upcoming film has hinted that Corenswet’s first superhero movie could recreate one famous scene that Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel chose to omit. And, notably enough, this scene was not only a part of the comics but was also one of the most iconic scenes in Christopher Reeve’s superhero movie from 1978!
David Corenswet’s Superman Seemingly Recreating an Iconic Christopher Reeve Moment
James Gunn is trying his best to keep a majority of the details about this upcoming film that would kickstart his version of the DC Universe strictly under wraps. However, even then, some leaked footage has still managed to peak through and make its way to the internet. Like the most recent one shared on X, which has launched fans back into speculation mode.

This one was shared by @NebsGoodTakes on X using GIFs and featured The Greatest Hits actor in a rather peculiar stance. This is because he had his arms folded on his chest and was gazing up a tree at something that the blur video couldn’t capture. Take a look at the clip for yourself:

Obviously, this could just be David Corenswet simply looking up at the tree due to something that could have caught his fancy instead of him posing that way for a scene. Nonetheless, this seconds-long GIF has still launched all those hardcore fans still caught in a flurry as they are now speculating if this could actually bring about an iconic scene in the movie.

The iconic scene in the talk here is the one from Christopher Reeve‘s Superman from 1978. This moment featured him flying out of the sky before swooping down and rescuing a cat from the tree after hearing the cries of the little girl who was calling the feline down. As heartwarming as it was, this scene was taken straight out of a page from the comics.
However, while Reeve perfectly won over millions of hearts with this one touching moment in his fan-favorite movie, the same wasn’t taken into consideration in 2013’s Man of Steel. Although it must be presumably because the themes of the movie were too dark to adapt this simple scene, nonetheless, it was not depicted in the Henry Cavill-starrer masterpiece.

But, from what it looks like, it seems like Gunn is presumably trying to bring back this very sweet “cat stuck in a tree” moment from Reeve’s first film as the fan-beloved superhero, as @CS11__ on X speculated via their post. And, if this is true, then it’s only good news, considering how this one sneak-peak has fans all giddied up about the movie.

Ever since this leaked footage reached fans on the internet, the fanbase hasn’t stopped considering even for a moment if this actually means Corenswet will be recreating an iconic Reeve scene. Just like how a fan, @CS11__, pointed out on X:
Is James Gunn actually going to give us a “Cat stuck in a tree” Superman moment? https://t.co/YJGqX0TvUB
— Craig (@CS11__) June 24, 2024
While this is indeed one of the simplest moments of the series, it is also tremendously heartwarming as it proves that the Kryptonian hero also does small things like these to help everyday people. This is because it establishes the fact that someone so significant can also do something so seemingly insignificant but one that means the world to someone else.
This is why fans have been hoping ever since that their speculation of this moment being included in the movie is actually true. Taking to X, here’s what a majority of them are saying:

He’s gonna prove to be the first director that has read a Superman Comic in a LONG TIME.

This is the kind of Superman I miss. Someone so powerful doing something so seemingly insignificant but it meaning the world to someone.

Inevitably enough, this only further proves that Gunn has very much read a good book or two on the fan-favorite superhero and is bringing his knowledge from the same into his works. That said, it would be safe to say at this point that the upcoming Corenswet-starrer holds a high chance of succeeding and perfectly kickstarting Gunn’s version of the DCU.
James Gunn’s Superman is set for a release date of the 11th of July, 2025. In the meantime, you can stream 1978’s Superman and 2013’s Man of Steel on Prime Video.
