In an interview back in October of 2023, Bleszinski praised PlayStation’s efforts to reboot and reinvent the series, transforming it from a button-mashing, linear action game into a rich and story-driven epic. He said:

I believe Gears needs a little bit of a reboot, like God of War had, and I’ve always said, Phil Spencer has my number, I’m happy to consult. Gears will always be near and dear to my heart.

The 2018 reboot received critical acclaim for its deep narrative, complex characters, and stunning visuals, setting a new standard for action-adventure games. Bleszinski hoped that Xbox could replicate this success with Gears, giving the series a fresh direction and deeper emotional impact.

This is something the fans have also been wanting. Bleszinski’s comments make sense as the Gears series has long been celebrated for its intense gameplay and serious narrative. However, in recent years, some fans feel the franchise has stagnated, sticking too closely to its original gameplay without evolving in meaningful ways.

Although Gears 5 introduced semi-open areas in a few chapters and tried to do something new, it still lacked the narrative depth and meaningful storytelling. Fans wanted higher stakes and more tension and weren’t quite as interested in the new characters. The success of the 2018 reboot, continuing with Ragnarok, shows the potential benefits of taking risks and pushing creative boundaries.

Gears of War E-day Is Set to Return to the Series Roots

The Gears series is set to return next year.

Gears of War E-Day was just announced last week at the Xbox Showcase. Emergence Day is a very important moment in the lore. This incident took place a few years prior to the first game’s events. The creative team has given careful consideration to prior fan response.

They’ve held lengthy player feedback sessions and examined the successes and failures of recent games. Their surveys also resulted in a resurgence of interest in the original trilogy’s character-driven narratives, brutal combat scenes, and linear storytelling.

The characters in the series were significantly impacted by E-Day as well. The protagonist of the series, Marcus Fenix, participated in the Locust War and was imprisoned for leaving his post in an unsuccessful attempt to save his father.

E-Day is expected to be a major step forward for the franchise, albeit one that travels back in time. The creators promise to create a game that will appeal to both older fans and new ones by going back to the series’ origins and emphasizing the elements that made it so beloved.

Are you looking forward to the game releasing next year? Let us know in the comments!
