I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness. He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny.

Mull’s first notable work began in 1976 when he played Garth Gimble in the drama spoof Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. He made a lot of guest appearances in popular sitcoms such as Family Guy, The Golden Girls, and Two and a Half Men.

My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously.

Apart from being an actor, Mull was also a painter and a musician. In an interview with AV Club, Mull said about his career that “every painter I know has a day job.” He described them as people who teach art at college schools or work as a cab driver. “I just happened to luck into a day job that’s extraordinary and a lot of fun and buys a lot of paint,” he quipped.

As a staple actor in the world of comedy, fans would easily recognize him as Russell the pharmacist in seasons 6 to 10 of Two and a Half Men, and as Jerry the acid-tripping attorney in The Ranch, both sitcoms starring Ashton Kutcher.
