There are various running gags throughout the course of One Piece. Whether it is with regard to Zoro’s horrible sense of direction, Sanji’s reaction towards women, or Brook’s jokes. Each of these add a comedic side to the series that is already divided into many aspects. Eiichiro Oda’s genius has always been one to bring forward genres upon genres and mix them together.

One such running gag, or rather a trait that fans have seen throughout the series is the string of lies set by Usopp. Ever since his introduction, fans have been fed his lies, no matter how vast they may be. The biggest of them all was that of Captain Usopp. While there was no truth to his claim, becoming a pirate captain was always a dream of his. One that might finally be coming true.

One Piece Opens the Doors for a New Captain

The upcoming One Piece chapter had a lot going on. The released spoilers of chapter 1117 (via X), show the ensuing chaos in the series as things get more and more serious. The series has slowly been distancing the Straw Hat Pirates from each other. They all have specific tasks and roles to play in the Egghead Arc and none of them go to waste. Even though Dr. Vegapunk’s broadcast ended prematurely, a lot is still going on as more questions and stakes rise.

Left behind on Egghead Island are Zoro and Jinbei ready to fight Saint Nusjuro, Luffy dealing with Saint Warcury and Sanji, alongside Bonney and Atlas also going their own way. With the way things are slowly taking shape, Sanji might soon encounter his own fair share of problems in the form of another Gorosei seeing the patterns forming with Zoro and Luffy.

The three strongest Straw Hat Pirates find themselves left on the island preoccupied with their own troubles. So one thing becomes clear, for the rest of them, there is no captain to lead the way.

Usopp’s Biggest Lie May Be Coming to Life

The sniper and now perhaps the interim captain of the Straw Hat Pirates now has the opportunity to make his dreams come true. Usopp has had an infamous reputation for being a liar. However, the latest arc has seen some of those lies being solidified into truths. It wouldn’t be too bizarre to assume that another lie could turn true. Syrup Village’s Usopp Pirates had a leader in the form of the character.

Ever since then, there has been only a wish and a lie with nothing more for Usopp’s dream to become a pirate captain. With the way One Piece has been progressing, this lie may too become true. He could take on the role of a temporary captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, at least until Luffy gets back.

He could finally get his time to shine. It could not only redeem his lies but also show him in a light that brings forward his leadership skills, those that he has been boasting about ever since he joined Luffy’s pirate crew.

One Piece is available to read on Viz Media with chapter 1117 releasing on 17th June 2024.
