Pixar has high hopes for Inside Out 2 as the studio’s future hinges on the success of the animated sequel, and so far, the impression has been good. It’s still a mystery if it can live up to the stellar performance of the first movie, but there’s no doubt that it could surpass the billion-dollar success of The Incredibles 2.
Over the past few years, the studio has failed to replicate the success of the animated movies they released before the pandemic. With Inside Out 2, they hope to finally get back to their groove and make up for their losses.
The Incredibles 2 Has The Longest Runtime Of All Pixar Movies
The Incredibles 2 was released in 2018 and holds the record as the highest-grossing Pixar film of all time, something that the studio is remarkably proud of. According to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian via Variety, the success was unexpected.
This is a number nobody would have expected even four days ago. Nobody wants to go out on a big limb. If you said that it would open to almost $200 million two weeks ago, people would have scoffed at that.
With a $180 million domestic debut, it was indeed already a win for the studio. By the end of its theatrical run, it grossed over $1.24 billion in worldwide ticket sales, as per Box Office Mojo. Dergarabedian added that the sequel, which took 14 years to make, showed the “drawing power of the superhero genre, whether in the live-action or animated realm.”
The animated sequel capitalized on the success of the superhero genre at the time while engaging with a wider audience thanks to its PG rating. It also appealed to generations of fans, specifically those who enjoyed the 2004 film and the new audiences today.
Another record that The Incredibles 2 holds is the longest runtime for any Pixar film. Fans certainly enjoyed spending one hour and 58 minutes basking in the adventures of the Parr family. Inside Out 2, on the other hand, only runs for one hour and 36 minutes.
With the situation of the animation studio, it does not seem easy to break the record of The Incredibles 2, and this is why they are banking on their most popular releases. Pixar president Jim Morris previously told Bloomberg that they are even considering a reboot for The Incredibles.
Inside Out 2 Debuts Worldwide, Off To A Good Start
Inside Out 2 has finally arrived in theaters, and the figures are looking really good. Releasing in a couple of overseas markets, the movie already grossed over $22.3 million in just two days according to Deadline.
The strategy might be working here as the film yielded mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a staggering 92% score, presenting a hopeful outcome for the franchise.
It remains to be seen how it will roll in the next few weeks, but seeing how the audience is reacting to it, it might redeem Pixar and even come close to the splendid box-office success of The Incredibles 2 – who knows?
Inside Out 2 is now showing worldwide.
