Catching your favorite Pokemon in Pokemon Go is one thing. However, catching its Shiny version is a whole other ballgame.

As difficult as it was in the original GameFreak titles to catch Shinies, it’s nothing compared to the grueling amount of work you have to put into catching one in the mobile game. And one Redditor’s kid has learned his lesson the hard way.

Getting Shinies in Niantic’s Pokemon Go either requires you to drop some cash or have some intense in-person battles. That’s exactly what people had to do for Shiny Mega Rayquaza. The developer announced last month that, on 29 June, Mega Rayquaza would appear more frequently during Elite Raids at times.

Elite Raids are an exhausting affair. You can only do them in person, need 24 hours to hatch your special Raid Eggs, and have 45 minutes to take them down.

So, imagine the disappointment the kid of this Redditor faced when he was the only one out of his family to not get the Shiny Mega Rayquaza after six raids, which is supposedly one of his favorite Pokemon.

While it would be quite simple to just hand over the Shiny to their son and let him have what he wants, OP uses this opportunity to teach him a life lesson about not getting everything he wants.

As OP puts it, “he’ll be fine.” And it looks like other experienced parents in the replies understand exactly where they’re coming from.

The fact of the matter is, there’s a solid 1 in 20 chance the Pokemon you get from a Raid is a Shiny. As a result, there were a ton of people who ended up with a lot of normal Rayquazas.

Sure, they’re cool, but they can’t fill the Shiny Mega Rayquaza-sized hole in your heart. People are already having trouble obtaining another Shiny, even with money, so not being able to get this one is like a kick to the stomach.

One reply mentioned how they teamed up with their friends to grind a bunch of Raids, only to end up with 46 Rayquazas without a Shiny in sight. This was so heartbreaking to read, that even OP couldn’t handle the pain.

If you’re in a similar situation, keep on kicking. You miss every shot you don’t take.

On second thought, a lot of people are missing every shot they’re taking. Maybe it’s better to know when to throw in the towel.
