The gaming community is currently celebrating the launch of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. However, it seems that FromSoftware’s largest expansion pack to date has brought with itself nothing but pure horror for some of the players, particularly for those with one specific type of character build.

Starting with the Blackgaol Knight found in the Western Nameless Mausoleum, gamers have found themselves struggling against the very first boss encountered when they arrive in the Land of Shadows, making them question if the studio has finally gone too far with the level of difficulty he likes to keep in the worlds he builds.

Over the past few years, the studio has successfully set itself apart from other game production houses by doing many things differently. This includes establishing an immensely hard and unforgiving level design in their games, presented in a way that keeps the player hooked for eternity.

Unfortunately, developers may have overstepped this time around as the players now complain of an exaggerated level of hardships faced in the new DLC, even rendering countless unique character builds made by them useless.

As witnessed in the case of Rellana, Twin Moon Knight, longer attack patterns and an unbelievable amount of poise have been now introduced to bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree. This has driven fans to make major and impactful changes to their builds if they want to hold the slightest hope of defeating an enemy again, especially those who focused on delivering critical hits earlier in The Lands Between.

One of the best build paths to head down for now asks the player to give up on all their fancy equipment, and instead go for a strength-focused build instead, which will help break the poise of the new and nefarious bosses faster.

When it was time to construct the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, the renowned director stated how he has attempted to make boss fights more ‘fun and engaging’ for the players, even apologizing in advance if that turns out not to be the case.

Unfortunately, while the reception to the DLC’s difficulty might not be what Miyazaki had in mind, tuning it down for players seems to be the last thing the director will opt for.

Believing it would take away all the joy from the game, he has stated how the absence of a hard level design and bosses will ‘break the game’ itself if implemented.
