We dated for a short time while we were working on No Small Affair, but I guess our particular affair was, in fact, pretty small. She was already struggling with a drug problem. One that I was blissfully unaware of until a couple of weeks before the movie ended.

How the actress hid her situation from Cryer remains a mystery, although there could be possible symptoms that the actor noticed. Perhaps it was Moore’s unmistakable charm that veiled all her troubles during the height of her fame in the ‘80s. The actor continued:

What would always be great about her was already evident; that incredible combination of vulnerability, toughness, and beauty.

She broke out as a movie star in the 1980s, and by the mid-1990s, she already become one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. Indeed, she became a member of the industry’s elite group, Brat Pack. Some of her prominent works include Blame It on Rio, St. Elmo’s Fire, and About Last Night.

Cryer noted how Moore was so “incredibly charismatic and had a much better grasp of the business” than he did. He also admitted they were both nervous about starring as leads in a film they first collaborated on.

Demi Moore Had A Sober Companion 24/7 To Look Out For Her

Demi Moore reflected on her struggles while working in the industry, and she confessed the pressure of society was too tempting to resist. In the same documentary, she shared (via People):

I was so fearful of failing, fearful of losing, and so desperate to fit in, belong. My need to please was definitely on high alert.

While filming for St. Elmo’s Fire, she had a “sober companion” who was hired to check on her round-the-clock. “They paid to have a sober companion with me 24/7, during the whole shooting,” she shared.

Moore also added that director Joel Schumacher took a gamble when he hired her for the movie, knowing he could just get another actress who was not particularly struggling with addiction.

Starring in the movie helped the actress remain sober, and having projects lined up for her kept her sane during the course of her sobriety. Dealing with substance abuse is not exactly a fun topic that one would bring up in a conversation, and this is perhaps the reason why Moore kept it a secret from Cryer while they were dating.

Andrew McCarthy’s BRATS documentary will stream on Hulu on June 13.
