After the two-fold delay involving the pandemic and the following WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Prime Video’s The Boys, among numerous other shows, has severely lagged at marketing its future plans to the public. As productions slowly get back on track, updates regarding the fates of some of the industry’s most prized shows are also being revealed accordingly.

However, as some projects find their new start at the end of summer, few others hunker down for their final season in the sun. The most prominent among the latter are Yellowstone and The Boys – both of which have become endearing to the masses due to their highly uninhibited content.

As tragic as the end may be for the audience, one might argue that ending the shows on a high note might be better than going down the path of Game of Thrones Season 8. Or, in the words of the late great Harvey Dent, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Eric Kripke Announces the Beginning of the End of an Era

For the better part of the 20th century, progress came by leaps and bounds in the stream of film and television. Noir drama and musicals gave way to mind-bending thrillers and operatic sci-fi. However, nothing compares to the advent of genre-defying, inexplicable phenomena introduced by the likes of Christopher Nolan (Memento, Inception) and Denis Villeneuve (Incendies, Arrival) among others.

Television, however, is a whole other ball game. Shows that were either focused on educational value or light-hearted family entertainment transformed into uncontested displays of the basest flaws, desires, and psychology of mankind. Out of the creative freedom of the 21st century were born such unhinged masterpieces like Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, and The Boys.

However, with a quarter of the century now over, the stories that felt like a novelty at the time have also become old news. Despite their evergreen status among the annals of Hollywood history, good things do come to an end, and as time would have it, one of the most prized and beloved shows of the streaming era is now coming to a sad close.

After gifting the audience with 4 seasons of incredible storytelling and a lifetime of trauma, The Boys showrunner and co-creator, Eric Kripke recently announced the end of Vought’s tyranny via social media. Adding a redacted image of The Boys script to the post, Kripke revealed in the caption:

#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season! Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!

With The Boys entering its penultimate season, the time has come to call in some loose ends together and begin tying them up in bloody knots. Since Season 5 ends the show for good, several arcs related to the primary characters of the show need to be resolved, villains need to be defeated, and truths need to be uncovered, especially after the plot takes an unhinged turn in Season 3.

As disturbingly good and enticing as The Boys may have been, attempts at replicating its magic failed after Prime Video green-lit a spin-off targeting a younger fanbase. Despite raking in an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Gen V failed to supersede or even recreate the old magic of its parent show due to its predictable plot pattern, limited worldbuilding, and uneven tone of the episodes [via IMDb].
