The upcoming show follows Batman’s relentless pursuit of justice in Gotham City. The studio has recently released the first official look at Caped Crusader, and considering Timm’s statements, fans could be in for a treat with the upcoming animated series.

Bruce Timm Claims Batman: Caped Crusader Could Outdo the Classic Series

Known for his extensive work with DC characters in animated shows and movies, Bruce Timm is returning with a new animated show following the DC superhero Batman. Timm is joined by the acclaimed filmmakers, Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams, as executive producers of the show.

The creators of the upcoming show discussed the show during a DC Fandome 2021 featurette, with Timm even claiming that Caped Crusader will be “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series.”

Talking about Batman: Caped Crusader, he suggested that the new show has the potential to do better than The Animated Series, as they had much more creative freedom to explore more themes than they earlier had.

It goes back to the original principles of the show we came up with in the 1990s… But at the time, there were limitations on what we could do with adult content and adult themes. Now I can say, ‘Ok, it’s the 1990s again, and I can do what I want to do.

The showrunner also discussed taking a fresh approach to character portrayals, suggesting improvements and new perspectives for several iconic characters previously featured in the original TV series.

Batman: Caped Crusader Writer Promises Bold Departure From The Animated Series

Along with Bruce Timm, Ed Brubaker, the head writer of Caped Crusader season 1 has also revealed significant departures from the classic animated show. During an appearance on ComicBookClub, he shared that the series will be what Timm had originally planned for the classic show. 

“I’ll warn you guys, it’s a lot different than BTAS. It’s very much a re-conception… it’s PG,” he noted before adding, “It’s sort of like the show Bruce Timm always wanted to make, but that they wouldn’t let him make.”

He also hinted at the incorporation of more noir themes and teased surprises for fans. “I don’t want to spoil it for you guys… but it’s kind of noir,” he further said during the conversation.

The new series is set to introduce a new cast with the Midnight Mass actor Hamish Linklater taking on the lead role alongside Christina Ricci as Catwoman, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn, and Diedrich Bader as Harvey Dent among others.

Batman: The Animated Series is available to stream on Max.

Batman: Caped Crusader is set to premiere on Amazon Prime on 1st August 2024.
