There’s no doubt that there’s nothing quite like Bethesda’s titles when it comes to the RPG genre. The developer brings players experience that keeps them engaged for years, and in some cases, like Skyrim, for well over a decade.

The Fallout franchise is one of Bethesda’s longest-running and popular series, rivaling the likes of Elder Scrolls. However,  Bethesda director Todd Howard has revealed his biggest regret with one of the most popular games of the franchise, Fallout 4. Even though Bethesda continues to release patches for the game, he’s never going to forgive himself for what he did to the game!

Todd Howard Believes Bethesda Should’ve Supported Fallout 4 and Skyrim Longer

There’s no denying that Fallout 4 is the most popular entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise. Bethesda’s open-world design, immersive storytelling, and complex RPG elements captured the attention of millions of gamers. After the Fallout TV series rose to fame, the game saw millions of players returning to the wastelands. Despite its success, Todd Howard believes Bethesda could’ve done more for the game.

In an interview with Mr.MattyPlays, Howard talked about how long Bethesda plans to keep supporting Fallout 76. His answer to the question was mostly driven by his biggest regrets about previous titles.

We would look back at Skyrim, which we’re still updating to a small extent and there’s all the creations and mods there, still a hugely played game. Same with Fallout 4, that we wish we had supported them longer.

Howard’s biggest regret about the duration of support Fallout 4 and Skyrim received is quite interesting. Both games have been given tons of large DLCs, which provided more than what players could have ever dreamt of. It’s easy to say that Bethesda could’ve done a lot more in hindsight, but not a single soul could’ve predicted how active Fallout 4 and Skyrim would become after so many years since their release.

Even still, Fallout 4 continues to receive small patches and was also given its next-gen update. We can understand Howard’s point of view, but there aren’t many players who are complaining about a lack of support from Bethesda for these classics.

Todd Howard Isn’t In Hurry To Release The Next Fallout Game

Bethesda has no plans to rush Fallout 4 sequel | Steam

Alongside plans for the future of Starfield and Fallout 76, Howard gave us a bunch of juicy tidbits of information regarding Bethesda’s future plans. It’s no secret that the hit Fallout TV series has sparked an interest in the post-apocalyptic franchise, and the next Elder Scrolls game still only has a teaser trailer. Obviously, Bethesda wouldn’t want to keep its player base waiting for too long, but it seems like they’re relaxed.

During the interview, Howard heavily emphasized the historically great popularity of the Fallout franchise and stated that Bethesda is in no rush to release the next installment. According to him, the TV series is meeting the company’s “narrative niche,” and crafting a huge single-player game takes a lot of time.

I totally get the desire for a new mainline single player game and look, those things take time. I don’t think it’s bad for people to miss things as well. We just want to get it right and make sure that everything we’re doing in a franchise, whether it’s Elder Scrolls or Fallout or now Starfield, that those become meaningful moments for everybody who loves these franchises as much as we do.

With Starfield‘s last year, Bethesda has already switched its focus to The Elder Scrolls 6. This means that a sequel to Fallout 4 is still years away. However, Bethesda has also been working on solutions to shorten the length of time between its title releases and hasn’t ruled out partnering with third-party developers on future games.
