In 2007’s Spider-Man 3, fans got to witness Maguire donning the famous black suit which was first introduced in the comic books in 1984’s Amazing Spider-Man #252. This costume that defined a more sinister and dark Spider-Man, was initially designed to look very different from what the actor finally wore in the film.

Tobey Maguire Almost Wore A Disastrously Designed Suit In Spider-Man 3

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was the 3rd installment in the trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as the webbed superhero. This film was significant as it showcased a very different Peter Parker aka Spider-Man whose red and blue suit is transformed into black by a symbiote from outer space. This causes the character to undergo a drastic change emotionally as he taps into a more aggressive and violent part of his persona.

One of the key elements of this narrative was expectedly the design of the black costume that would define this transformation in Spider-Man. While the final look turned out to be a perfect representation, the original design was anything but appealing. An X user shared some rare pictures that showed the result of initial deliberations behind the symbiote suit.

These images clearly prove that this version of the symbiote suit would have been a bad choice, not to mention an extremely uncomfortable and unflattering one. To begin with, the design does away with the intricate patterns that define both Spider-Man suits that were featured in the film, and instead goes for an pitch-black, leathery texture.

Apart from being glaring and unattractive to look at, this costume would not have been a practical design for Maguire to move around for the action scenes in the film. Ultimately, sense prevailed, and the slick and streamlined black Spider-Man suit that audiences are now very familiar with, found its way into the final cut of the film.

Michael Jackson Almost Played Spider-Man Before Tobey Maguire

While Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland have famously portrayed Spider-Man in different Marvel projects, the character was given life through the pioneering efforts of Tobey Maguire who became the first Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2002 film. Even till today, Maguire holds a special place in fans’ hearts when it comes to the beloved superhero.

Interestingly, one of his surprising competitors for the role was none other than the King of Pop Michael Jackson, who expressed keen interest to play Spider-Man. According to a report in Screen Rant, Jackson who was an ardent comic book fan, had taken it upon himself to be cast in a live-action film based on the superhero, a fact that was corroborated by Stan Lee himself.

Furthermore, Lee stated that the popstar did not want to leave any stone unturned to ensure that he bagged this part, and even went as far as to offer to buy the Marvel franchise to make his dreams a reality. His obsession with the character was further elaborated on by his nephew Taj in an interview with Popcorned Planet.

I remember being with my brothers and him talking about purchasing Marvel. He wanted to do that with Stan Lee. They had been talking and discussing that. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, I think they were shut down from doing that.

While it may be difficult to conjure up Jackson’s image as a Marvel superhero, a breakdancing Spider-Man could have been a seriously exciting prospect. But, due to unexplained reasons, this negotiation did not materialize.

Having said that, Jackson’s involvement could also have done more damage considering the singer’s troubled life that was peppered with many controversial moments. As it turned out, Marvel got Maguire on board and the rest is history.
