In a recent interview, Nolan gave the world a real-time insight into the thought process and ideation that went behind the making of Inception. For a film that revolves around technology, Nolan took inspiration from tech giant Apple. The cherry on top of the flawless script and storyline was its star-studded cast, ranging from Leonardo DiCaprio to another of Nolan’s future stars, Cillian Murphy.

The 53-year-old director’s ingenuity is undoubted. Christopher Nolan has given Hollywood some of its greatest hits, from The Dark Knight, and Interstellar, to as recent as Oppenheimer. Nevertheless, Inception was brought in at a time when technology was still on its rise. Hence, when asked about how he contemplated the idea of a dream-sharing technology in the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer, and if Nolan happens to observe some relativity with that to today’s reality, he had an eye-opening insight.

Nolan told The Atlantic in a recent interview,

“When the film came out, in 2010, the smartphone was exploding in popularity, and some of its inward-looking structure was actually based on the branching mechanisms of the iPod. I’d been using iPods to listen to music, and on the menu screens, you have these branching networks that allow you to go deeper into different catalogs.”

The user interface of Apple’s iPod is what helped the genius strike up the idea of a complex inward technology that would earn Nolan the recognition of his lifetime. The Tenet director also referenced the works of America-Canadian science fiction writer William Gibson, who had hinted at a similar perspective years ago.

The extensive insight from the English director also discussed the time when smartphones were just starting to become a part of everyday life. In hindsight, it seems like an unreal time. Nolan addressed the now-popular idea of multiple realities seemed unconventional back then. However, being modest, Nolan admitted that it was all by chance. He added,

“This was all unwitting, by the way: There’s a tendency to speak about your past work as though everything was planned and intentional. You try to analyze in hindsight what was going on in your head, and what synchronized with the world.”

Justifying his innovative mind, Nolan revealed that the secret to the ideation of Inception and his great work ethic overall is him embracing his instincts and letting self-conscious take a backseat in his quest to bring great ideas to life. With his recent success with Oppenheimer, it is likely we might see the director at the esteemed 96th Academy Awards. In all, Nolan makes sure to allow things that urge him to think, and it shows in his movies.
