Guy Ritchie is perhaps best known for his Robert Downey Jr starrer Sherlock Holmes. Thanks to his unique perspective and Downey’s performance, the two-part Sherlock Holmes movie became an instant hit. An obvious Billion-Dollar movie project, fans have been patiently waiting for a threequel since 2011.
The billion-dollar franchise director, Guy Ritchie recently spoke up with Collider to reveal the delay for the most anticipated threequel. And it is none other than the lead star Robert Downey Jr. who is the main culprit.
Robert Downey Jr Is To Blame For Sherlock Holmes 3 Delay
The first Sherlock Holmes movie was released back in 2009 starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. Directed by award-winning director Guy Ritchie, the movie presented a fresh perspective of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective. The first one grossed worldwide over $524 Million, while its sequel went on to earn $543.4 Million worldwide. So it only made sense to make a third part of the billion-dollar franchise. Unfortunately, the third part, although in advance talks, has been facing delay after delay.
First, it was the pandemic and now it is the lead star of the series, Robert Downey Jr, who has been causing the delay, as revealed by Guy Ritchie.
“Well, honestly, I left this up to Robert [Downey Jr.]. So Robert wanted to be in charge of this. The ball’s in his court, so he’s in charge of the script, he’s in charge of the whole thing. I’ve moonwalked out of that until there’s a time for me to get involved.”
With Robery Downey Jr involved in all aspects of the threequel, fans can anticipate a masterpiece in the making.
Sherlock Holmes 3: Everything We Know So Far
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the first two movies of the billion-dollar franchise remain his career’s most well-known. However, as per the latest reports it has been revealed that the third installment of Sherlock Holmes will be directed by Dexter Fletcher. Dexter Fletcher is best known for directing movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Rocketman.
Furthermore, there were recent reports of Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan collaborating with Warner Bros for creating a spin-off television series on the life of the illustrious fictional detective. While this shows just how vested the Iron Man star is in the character, the chances of Sherlock Holmes 3 being released this year seem very bleak.
