As with any other title, collectibles are always something very interesting for players. This mechanic encourages players to thoroughly explore the game in order to acquire all the collectibles. Cats are the collectibles for the recently released Rise of the Ronin.
This will help you to complete all regions of the map, make a bond with the residents of that particular place, and unlock some kind of service with the felines. One of the game’s developers has clarified the reasons behind this, giving a lot more details about how it works and why cats were chosen.
Rise of the Ronin Has a Peculiar Collectible
With the confirmation that Sony will not release any exclusive AAA-budget games this year, fans will only have more independent IP or a smaller budget. One of these exclusives, Rise of the Ronin, has received mostly positive reviews from both fans and critics upon its release last month.
The game was developed by Ninja Theory, the studio that made games like Nioh, a Soulslike that was very popular at one moment. In a recent interview, Yosuke Hayashi, the game’s producer, talked about how collectibles—the cats all around the map—are involved in the game’s process.
This pet has a very good reason to be historically accurate with the period that the game sets, so it makes sense as a mechanic. Similar to any open-world title, these cats are ubiquitous and significantly contribute to forming strong bonds with specific characters.
The Cats Are the Heart of the Game
Hayashi said the cats aren’t without any reason in the game. He added that having cats as a collectible was decided during the game’s development but they too have a historical background during the Bakamatsu period.
He explained,
During the Bakumatsu period, the cities and villages weren’t as clean as they are now, so a lot of people owned cats to take care of any rats that might show up.
This is a very good reason to be a part of the experience. The historical background is one of the most important details that the game has. The team behind Rise of the Ronin really tried to make the title as historically accurate as possible to truly immerse players in the plot.
That’s not all as the game also has something for dog lovers. Players will be able to find Shiba Inu and pet them, roaming around in multiplayer mode. The game is currently exclusive to the PS5. At least for the moment, there is no information about a possible release on other platforms, but the studio has already launched games on PC.
