Out of the many X-Men mutants, there is one fan-favorite character whose life recently got a jaw-dropping twist. Despite his demonic mutant demeanor, Nightcrawler/ Kurt Wagner has earned a reputation as the good guy. The skilled combatant with the ability to teleport was known as the son of the merciless Azazel and anti-hero Mystique. However, a retcon to the narrative was recently presented that revealed the true origins of Nightcrawler.
Comic book fans have been aware of the iconic love story developing between X-Men mutants Mystique and Destiny for long. They had been important characters in X-Men’s Krakoan Age. Therefore, the retcon provided in X-Men Blue: Origins, which revolves around the true lineage of Nightcrawler, put the anti-heroic mutants in center stage once again. This also left X-Men fans baffled, as they were accustomed to an entirely different plot.
The son of two X-Men
Marvel’s #1 issue of the X-Men Blue: Origin comic series released last week changed the course of Nightcrawler’s history. Destiny and Mystique were revealed as Kurt Wagner’s biological parents, a historical shift in the X-Men mythos. The issue sheds light on the complex relationship between Raven and Irene, who together gave birth to Nightcrawler, otherwise known as the son of Azazel.
As per X-Men Blue: Origins, Mystique altered her genetics with her shape-shifting abilities to conceive a child with her lover Destiny. A child conceived out of love. Destiny sheltered Kurt in her womb although Mystique also mimicked the pregnancy to give birth to their child together. But Mystique was rather manipulated by Destiny, using their son as a tool of fate. Comic fans were not prepared for this massive secret reveal and were taken aback. But wait, there is more.
Later on, Destiny used their child, Nightcrawler to bring down his demonic father Azazel from taking over the universe. This secret about Kurt’s origins was hidden from him for years, building an estranged relationship with his original family. It is worth noting that Nightcrawler remains the heart of X-Men, with immense faith being central to his character.
Nightcrawler demands to know his origins
The unfolding of Nightcrawler’s birth story is as monumental as bewildering. The Marvel comic series revealed that the mutant decided to face Mystique, looking for answers about his parents. As a result, Raven broke the truth, unveiling the complicated memory of Kurt’s birth. Even though he was born out of love, his parents could not expose him to the same.
Soon after Kurt was born, Mystique went looking for Destiny leaving him in the woods, only to be retrieved by magician Margali Szardos. Hence, Nightcrawler was raised as Margali’s adopted son, tracing back to a happy and fun-filled childhood, per X-Men Blue: Origins. However, later on, betrayed by Margali and her family, Kurt was left abandoned once again. This time, he found his forever family after Professor X and the X-Men took him in.
Nightcrawler was then nurtured into a hero, often leading the pack of X-Men and saving numerous lives. Nevertheless, it all spins back to the mutant’s original backstory of being the son of two powerful X-Men mutants, Destiny and Mystique. Hopefully, this narrative of Nightcrawler’s birth is here to stay or who knows what the future may further reveal.
