20 “Squid Game” Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Cast

The writer and director of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk had Lee Jung-Jae and Park Hae-soo in mind for the roles of Gi-hun and Sang-woo ever since he wrote the script.

Anupam Tripathi, who plays the role of Ali, came to Korea all the way from India to study acting. Director Hwang said it was difficult for him to find foreign actors in Korea to play Ali’s role. However, Anupam’s audition resolved the entire issue.

When Anupam initially read the show’s script, he read it all in one sitting. He was highly moved by the life and death stakes of the show.

Jung Ho-Yeon, who played the role of Sae-byeok, is a famous model who rose to fame after getting placed second in Korea’s Next Top Model in 2013. Very recently she was crowned as the global ambassador of Louis Vuitton.

Squid Game is actually her first major acting role. Before this, she had only starred in a few music videos, like 100’s “Beat.”

Ho-Yeon sent in her audition tape for the show while being in NYC for a fashion show. This was the first script she received and her first audition ever.

Wi Ha-Joon who plays police officer Jun-ho is a familiar face of Korean rom-coms. He said that he enjoyed transitioning to “a bit more serious” role.

Gong Yoo, who is another known face of K-Dramas appears as a salesman in the show. While doing his degree at university, Gong Yoo never gave a thought to becoming an actor. He’s now one of the biggest and most well-known South Korean actors.

The day Squid Game’s cast arrived on the show’s set, they spent a lot of time taking pictures because they were taken aback by the set design and height of every single room and game.

To get Gi-hun and Sang-woo’s friendship to appear more genuine onscreen, Lee Jung-Jae and Park Hae-soo would often hang out and get drunk after shoots.

Even Jung Ho-Yeon and Lee Yoo-mi bonded while filming and talked through their scenes together a lot in order to make Sae-byeok and Ji-yeong look like BFFs.

Jung Ho-yeon happens to be really good friends with Blackpink’s Jennie. In fact, Jennie payed many visits to Squid Game’s set while Ho-yeon was filming in 2020.

Lee Jung-jae said the cast made a lot of improvisations while filming. His favorite was when Gi-hun tries to put the straw back in Sae-byeok’s coffee and keeps failing. Jung Ho-yeon was laughing so hard that she couldn’t lift her head up.

Despite the show being Number #1 in over 90 countries, Park Hae-soo didn’t realize how big they had made it. He said it all hit him when Jimmy Fallon invited them on his show. 

During his time in the military, Wi Ha-joon watched his favorite film, New World, which stars his costar Lee Jung-jae about “30 times”.

Since Jung Ho-yeon played a North Korean defector in the show, she studied with actual North Korean defectors in order to get her dialect correct.

Park Hae-soo welcomed his first child the day Squid Game premiered on Netflix. His friends gave his son the nickname “Baby Squid.”

Lee Jung-Jae and Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Front Man, have been each other’s close friends since they began their acting careers. 

Anupam Tripathi got to keep his green tracksuit of number 199 after filming concluded.
