If this decade of comic book excellence belongs to anyone, it is being single-handedly ruled by Tom Hardy. With a stellar performance as the villainous Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012), he now moves on to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe film Venom (2018) as the titular anti-hero.

But, that is not all. It seems that Hardy is hiding more up his sleeve with a possible potential animated universe connection to the wildly anticipated upcoming Sony film, Into the Spider-Verse.

Venom Has a Link To Into the Spider-Verse?

Apart from both being Sony Spider-Verse films (as both are produced by Sony and set within the Spider-Man universe), there is little that connects the live-action Tom Hardy film, Venom to the animated feature film set to introduce Miles Morales to the big screen for the first time. Despite not being exactly MCU mainstream films (in terms of the infamous post-credit arcs), being placed in a cinematic universe adjacent to it was sure to rub off on Sony as well. Venom was accordingly equipped with 2 post-credits scenes so interesting that they are sure to keep the fans theorizing for months.

Firstly, the delightfully sociopathic peekaboo from the bright red-haired wig-wearing Woody Harrelson was an immediate chart-topper even in a film that exceeded all expectations. But what was even more surprising and mind-melding was the unexpected second post-credits scene that introduced the animated Spider-Verse.

Perfect in every way with scenes that look stripped straight out of a comic book itself, the Spider-Verse came with a few surprises. A Spider-Man that is not Peter Parker should have been enough to set the audience’s Spider senses tingling. But while Miles Morales stepped up to the role, it was a shock to see him standing over a tombstone that read Peter Parker, only to be soon surprised by a sneaky and slightly aged, beer-bellied Peter Parker in a partial Spider-Man costume paired with grey sweatpants and a trench coat.

How Does Venom Fit Into the Spider-Verse Storyline?

It has been theorized for quite some time now that the larger arc of Spider-Verse spreads across multiple dimensions and multiple Spider-Man universes, making it a purely multiversal film revolving around Spider-Man. It is not entirely impossible that Venom, a peak Spider-Man antagonist could have a part to play in at least one of the multiple universes with multiple potential timelines inhabited by the web-slinging superhero.

It is also possible that one of the universes shown in Into the Spider-Verse could very well be a live-action one, thus connecting Tom Hardy’s Venom universe to Miles Morales’ Spider-Verse. Moreover, considering how every post-credits scene of a Marvel film works to indicate the future of the character and also work as a tie-in with a larger universe at play, it is quite possible that Venom may have some role to play in the future of the Spider-Verse, perhaps even as an inadvertent antagonist that Miles Morales could encounter in one of his trips across the Spider-Verse.
