DC‘s upcoming Flashpoint, which will most likely focus on Barry Allen’s time-travel adventure to save his mother from the Reverse Flash and the radical chain of events that occurs thereafter, has been in the news recently. The newly-found directors of Flashpoint, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, discussed how they joined the DC Extended Universe.
WB approached them first and gave the Spider-Man: Homecoming writers their choosing from multiple different projects:
“They gave us a list of DC properties and said, ‘Is there anything you’d be interested in?’, in no way promising us anything at all,” stated Daley.
Goldstein collected Flash comics as a kid, so Flashpoint was a natural fit:
“They were interested in us because of Game Night and Spider-Man. Because of that combination they did kind of say, ‘We’d like you to consider one of our movies.’ So we read a number of the scripts, and that was one—we’re huge fans of the character, I collected the comic books as a kid. It was an exciting possibility.”
Much like Peter Parker, the Flash is a hero that struggles with finding the balance between his life as a civilian and a hero. This was what also attracted the two directors to the project:
“Just the fact that the character is unique from other superheroes in that he doesn’t completely have his s**t together like Superman does. It’s more of a ground-level superhero,” Daley said.
The super-fast hero the Flash travels into a timeline where Earth is a mess and its heroes are lost and scattered. It’s up to him to put things right.
Flashpoint is rumored to release in 2020.
