The last act of Deadpool 2 shows Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, his remaining X-Force teammates: Cable and Domino, and a few X-Men allies: Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her girlfriend Yukio, all rushing to stop young Russell Collins (Julian Dennison) from making a costly decision that could change the future in apocalyptic ways forever. Russell, with help from new friend and accomplice the Juggernaut, are returning to his orphanage home, the Essex House for Mutant Rehabilitation, to attempt to burn it down and kill the Headmaster who has been torturing Russell constantly. While Cable wants to take Russell out immediately, Deadpool wants thirty seconds to try to convince the young kid to choose a better path.

Even though Wade tries to change Russell’s mind by giving him a motivational speech topped off with a hug, the kid has already made up his mind and is about to torch the Essex House and the Headmaster. This is until Cable makes the call and fires his last bullet at the kid. Deadpool, who is still wearing the inhibitor collar that negates his healing powers, decides to jump in front of the bullet that was shot towards Russell from Cable, and gets shot in the heart. In a extremely funny but drawn-out death sequence, Wade gets his Logan ending and dies while protecting the younger generation of mutants from a dark future of brutality.

However, even though Wade is seen in the afterlife and has been reconnected with his dead love Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), fate isn’t done with Mr. Deadpool yet. Cable still has one final charge in his time travel device, which was supposed to be used to return to his own timeline where his family who was killed by an evil adult Russell, are now safe and still alive. In a moment of sacrifice, Cable ended up using his last time travel to go back to the start of the Essex House raid and put the little game token memento that Wade and Vanessa cherished into Deadpool’s suit, right where the bullet would end up hitting Deadpool. That decision created a different version of events, where Russell is still convinced to side with the good guys, but Deadpool still gets to live. Cable explains that this sacrifice is worth it, and that he will remain in this timeline to help ensure a better future for all mutants.

All of these events convince the once lost and broken members of X-Force: Deadpool, Cable, Domino, Russell, and Dopehinder to all find comfort in one another as a sort of a “family”. A hilarious series of mid-credit scenes then show Deadpool using Cable’s repaired time travel device to right some other wrongs in history.
