Chiefs Vs. Colts AFC Divisional Round Recap

Here we are, the final 8 teams left in the race for the Super Bowl. I apologise in advance for my absence, real-life was a bit crazy lately, but I’m good to go now to bring more NFL content. Now to the game at hand between the Kansas City Chiefs (13-4) and the Indianapolis Colts (11-7). The Chiefs got here through the bye winning their division and having one of the top 2 teams in the AFC. The Colts on the other hand had to beat the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round to make it to this game. This game was played in the Chiefs home which gave a nice home field advantage to the well rested Chiefs. This advantage would seem very apparent as the Chiefs played well, but did they play well enough?

The Chiefs solid play throughout the game started early as the drew first blood with a touchdown. The snow on the field seemed to have little effect on Chiefs running back Damien Williams as he scampered 11 yards for the touchdown. This put the Chiefs up 7-0, and they weren’t done there. Still in the first quarter, back up running back Tyreek Hill would convert on his only carry on the day taking it 36 yards for a touchdown putting Kansas up 14-0 after the 1st. The Chiefs would also end up opening the scoring in the 2nd quarter as Harrison Butker would convert on a 39 yard field goal increasing the lead to 17-0. The Colts would get on the board shortly after as Hajee Goode would block a punt resulting in a special teams touchdown cutting the deficit to 17-7. Kansas would respond to that touchdown with one of their own as Patrick Mahomes would scamper 4 yards for the touchdown, bolstering the lead to 24-7 to end the half. It would have been 24-10 had Adam Vinatieri not missed a 23 yard field goal at the end of the half, but alas it was not meant to be for the wily veteran.

There would be no scoring for either team in the 3rd quarter which meant the Colts would have to make up a 17 point deficit in the 4th to have any hope of advancing. Late in the 4th Indianapolis would be the first to score in the half as Andrew Luck found T.Y. Hilton in the endzone for a 29 yard passing touchdown. Unbelievably enough Vinetieri would also miss the point after so the Colts now trailed 24-13. That’s where the comeback would halt as the Chiefs would add an insurance touchdown. This time Darrel Williams would get the rushing touchdown taking it 6 yards up the gut and putting this game away. The final score of the game would be 31-13 for Kansas as the move on to the AFC conference championship round.

This was oddly enough not a great game for the quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes only had a meh performance going 27/41 for 278 yards. Mahomes did add a rushing touchdown on 1 of 3 carries. Colts pivot Andrew Luck didn’t fair much better going 19/36 for 203 yards and 1 touchdown. There were rushing touchdowns galore for the Chiefs as 4 different players scored rushing touchdowns (Damien Williams, Tyreek Hill, Darrel Williams, and Patrick Mahomes). The top performer for Kansas in the running game was Damien Williams who had 25 carries for 129 yards and 1 touchdown. The Colts struggled on the ground as Marlon Mack had only 46 yards on 9 carries. No Chief receivers caught touchdowns this game, but Travis Kelce made good ground getting 108 yards on 7 catches. T.Y. Hilton had the only receiving touchdown on the day, he lead the Colts with 4 catches for 60 yards. Harrison Butker was a perfect 1/1 for field goals for the Chiefs, whereas Adam Vinatieri missed his only attempt on the night going 0/1.
