The highly-anticipated Uncharted film set to star Tom Holland is finally arriving in theaters in 2020. Sony has been gearing up for this film nearly two years ago as they were testing how well the young actor would sit with audiences after his big break as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Uncharted video game, it delves into the world of young and charismatic Nathan Drake as he travels the world and unearths historical mysteries. He solves complex puzzles, conquer physical quests, and fights enemies in whatever form they might be. Think of Lara Croft or Indiana Jones with a modern twist!

The movie will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Night at the Museum) and is expected to begin filming by the end of this year. Mark Walker and Jonathan Rosenberg wrote the latest draft of the screenplay; however, there are still no details on the storyline or how the film will be connected to the game. Former director Shawn Levy said in 2017 that the movie will be an origin story but this might change under the supervision of its new director.

The rest of the cast has yet to be revealed and there is no certainty which supporting characters will appear in the film. One of the major roles that the film needs is Victor Sullivan, Nathan’s mentor. Holland has previously voiced out that he wants fellow MCU stars Chris Pratt or Jake Gyllenhaal to take the role.

Despite being one of the highest-selling video games, Uncharted is not yet excluded from the so-called plague of video game adaptations. Popular titles such as Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed, and others have received generally poor critical reviews. Fans are hoping the young actor could break the curse and possibly pave the way for other adaptations that have been stuck in development.

Uncharted is set to hit the theaters on December 18, 2020. The movie will be put up directly against Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake and Coming to America 2. Sony is apparently taking advantage of a December slot with no Star Wars or DC movie in-line.
