X-Men: The Animated Series Creators Hint At Possible Revival

After twenty-seven years since the series began and twenty-two years in its absence, X-Men: The Animated Series may find new life at Disney provided the series original team gets their way in an upcoming pitch.

X-Men: The Animated Series was a 90s animated series and considered to this day one of the most popular animated comic-book shows along with Batman: The Animated Series. The five-season run saw fan favorites such as Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, and Beast take center stage as they tackled Mutant prejudice while saving those who would condemn them from external forces such as Magneto, Juggernaut, Apocalypse and the Dark Phoenix.

With its comic-book animation style, the series gained critical acclaim and fan adoration more-so than many superhero television serials at the time.

Now it seems the show’s creative team is hoping that Disney, who now finally own the rights to the characters, will revive and continue the series both for its original fans and a new generation almost twenty years after it originally aired. While the original creatives are prepared for Disney to take their own aesthetic liberties with the series, they are hoping to keep what made the series such a success intact.

As well as showing standard good vs evil battles throughout the series, X-Men was praised during its run on Fox Kids for its mature storytelling and character development. The most notable of story-arcs in the series include the Rise of Apocalypse and the Dark Phoenix Saga, both of which have in recent years also been into X-Men movies by Fox, though not nearly as well received.

Since Disney acquired Fox, all Marvel characters once owned by the latter studio now belong to Disney, just as those within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as almost every other Marvel character in Marvel Comics. The only exception being Spider-Man whose character rights are still owned by Sony. However, while Disney now owns the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, MCU helmsman Kevin Feige has recently advised fans not to expect to see an X-Men movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time.

Directed by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain. Check out the synopsis below:

“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”

Dark Phoenix is now playing in theaters.
