It looks like Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista is willing to take a page out of his director James Gunn’s playbook.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe fan-favorite actor took to Twitter late last night to express his interest in joining the DC Universe.
I accept! https://t.co/ts6DnBvj8W— Dave Bautista (@DaveBautista) June 12, 2019
The actor very well could just be having a little fun, but there is more to the story than meets the eye.
When James Gunn was initially fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after some old offensive tweets reemerged… Bautista was one of Gunn’s most vocal defenders, even going as far as to threaten to leave the Marvel franchise if Gunn wasn’t reinstated (which he later was in March 2019).
After Gunn was scooped up by Warner Bros. to direct the Suicide Squad sequel; along with Bautista’s very public disapproval of how Disney treated his friend and former director, had many fans were keen on the idea of the former WWE Superstar jumping the Marvel ship and taking a role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Bautista definitely has the physicality to pull off the role of Bane, and in addition to his brilliant comedic timing as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War… he has also proven himself cable of handling dramatic roles like in Spectre (2015) and Blade Runner: 2049 (2017).
Though Bautista took it upon himself to answer whether or not he would do it… it still is not particularly clear whether or not he could do it.
With James Gunn reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Bautista will also be returning to finish out the trilogy with Gunn at the helm. We don’t know the specifics of Bautista’s contract with Marvel, but there might be some fine print that wouldn’t allow him to star in another major comic book franchise.. meaning he wouldn’t be able to join DC until after his tenure as Drax is over.
Bautista has opened up about the current situation. In a recent interview with Pro Wrestling Sheet he has stated that he “hopes it’s good” between him and Marvel and that the people at Marvel have been very “understanding” of his support for James Gunn.
He went on to say that he “never actually talked to anybody from Disney” about the Gunn situation and that though the people at Marvel felt the same way “they just weren’t outspoken about it.”
Many fans gained a whole new level of respect for Dave Bautista…not many actors are brave enough to take on The Mouse… risking his own career and reputation while sticking up for what he believed was right.
It looks like all parties involved are doing their best to move forward, putting their past differences aside and focus on creating the best movies they can.
Would you like to see Dave Bautista play Bane in the DCEU?
