The Academy Award nominations were announced this morning, with plenty of surprises and many fulfilled expectations as well.

The nominations were announced live this morning, on the Academy Awards YouTube page, and Todd Phillips’ Joker led the pack with 11 nominations which are the most Oscar nominations ever seen for a comic book film. Following in second place is a three-way tie between 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and The Irishman, each film came away with 10 nominations.

One of the biggest surprises is Scarlet Johannson received two simultaneous nominations in Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress for her work in Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story respectively. Another surprise is that Netflix’s animated Christmas film Klaus also received a nomination for Best Animated Feature. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out received a single nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay which is what to be expected at the Academy Awards as the Academy tends to award a couple of films with a lot of awards without much diversity among the films as a whole.

Many people were snubbed this year – no nominations were given to Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers, Taron Egerton in Rocketman, and Awkwafina for The Farewell in the acting categories. Avengers: Endgame received only one nomination for Best Visual Effects. There were also no women nominated in the Best Director category as well which many have pointed out as being a poor decision as there were many women who could have been given the honor.  Uncut Gems didn’t receive any nominations so there is a chance that Adam Sandler will make good on his threat of making a terrible movie just to spite the Academy.

The Oscars Ceremony is on February 9, 2020.

A list of all the nominations below are based on award presentation at the ceremony.
