Sarah Watson, creator of the series The Bold Type will write the script for the original tv show. The project is being developed by Warner Bros. TV, Fox’s content accelerator SideCar and Amblin TV (a division of Steven Spielberg’s production company). Richard Donner, who directed and produced the original 1985 Goonies film is also taking on the project. Producer and Richard Donner’s wife Lauren Shuler Donner (X Men, Deadpool) is also joining the initiative. Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) is set to direct.

The formal logline is the following: “After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of their favorite movies —The Goonies. Over the course of the season of the potential series, their passion will inspire a town in desperate need of hope in this love letter to the power of cinema, storytelling and dreams.”

Written by Steven Spielberg, the classic 80’s adventure film starred Sean Astin, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan and Corey Feldman. The story is about a group of kids, Mikey, Mouth, Data and Chunk, growing up in a small town and calling themselves “The Goonies”. They have a few rules, like “Goonies never say die!” Their newest adventure begins when they find a treasure map in Mickey’s attic. For many movie fans, The Goonies remains cult and one of these magical and timeless 80’s movies, just like E.T., Gremlins or Back to the Future.

These last few years, the popularity of movies and series focusing on a group of young kids increased. Shows like Stranger Things and films like Super 8 paid tribute to the classics we grew up watching. With this new original series, Fox is once again betting on the retelling of a well known and so far always successful recipe.
